Bosch SB H4 to Hella H4 HELP!
I have the Bosch sealed beam H4 headlights out of my '83 SC and go to install the Hella non-sealed beam H4s but I seem to be missing a retaining ring to hold the headlight in the bucket. Do I pry the old ring off the Bosch unit or do I need something else?
TIA, Lance |

In the left background is the old headlight with glued-on rim/ bucket with the bucket that mounts to the car to the right. In the foreground is the new headlight. I need the piece(s) that go in front of and behind the new headlight to secure it the bucket in the right rear.

The old lights look like H5's to me. The new lights may have H4 connectors but they will not fit your SC. Look up H4s in the parts section from our host. There is a how-to section as well.
Here is the Tech article: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/mult_h4_headlamps/mult_h4_headlamps.htm

Yep, the left light is not a sealed beam and do look like H5s.

That' a H5 light you're replacing. On top of that, the new H4 you have is for a sugar-scoop. You have three choices.

I see the problem...the buckets are for sealed beam halogen lights, not the original sealed beam buckets.
What I need are original sealed beam buckets to install the replacement Hella's in to. So much for an hour-long project! Lance |

At some point a PV has glued H4 bulbs to the back of the H5 headlights....no wonder they are pitifully dim!
I've posted in the 4sale-WTB forum for either a set of US sealed beam parts or a Euro H4 setup. Thanks for all the replies! Lance |

I meant P(revous) O(owner)...
How dumb can someone be to glue an H4 bulb into an H5 housing? Guess it applies to me too as it wasn't immediately obvious. |

I know it's rather expensive but the euro H4 is the way to go. When I bought my car it came with the stock sugar scoop/ sealed beam setup the was lacking big time! I went ahead and bought a pair of US H4's to get brighter lights. The H4's did give more light but not in the right place. The pattern of light wasn't focused but rather scattered but the funny thing is when I used the high lights the beam looked like it pointed up! Needless to say I saved up and got the euro H4's and now the light is focused and bright. Read Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply he has good info on everything automotive lighting.
