you just can't Kill SCs
My 83 has very nearly 200,000 miles now. I bought it oh, 15 years or so ago, did my first track days with it, my first mods, you name it...
Of late, it's been eating oil at 1qt per 600 miles or so, which was getting to be excessive. No smoke though, oil just mysteriously vanished (75%) and puddled a little on the floor (20%), the remaining 5% went into the aroma of the car... I figured, 200K + a bazillion track days, it's due for a rebuild at some point... I figured while it was in for a valve adjustment (sorry, I do those myself on my 912 but I hate doing it on the 911), I asked the mechanic to look for obvious leaks, with little hope ! Ha ! The 2 oil feeds near the upgraded hydraulic tensioners, made of a kinda cloth/rubber, and which looked bone dry were actually totally hosed ! If you twisted them a little, they gushed oil !!! Replaced those, the darn thing is bone dry again ! I guess they leaked more while the car was under higher RPM with more oil pressure, and I never saw them leak at idle on my driveway ! I have not recalculated Oil per miles yet, but it's already way over 600 and stable! I'll be damned ! SCs are ridiculous cars, you cannot kill them.... Wow, I'll have to check mine! I have about the same oil consumption and there's always an oily film on the rear bumper and license plate after a few days. But no drips on the floor to speak of and no smoke.

And to think folks are telling me to sell my 83SC and buy a 964 or 993 instead of spending money on it. I dunna know, I think it'll hold up for years to come with news like this.

From behind the wheel it's almost like being in an SC though, a little dissapointing to me, just power steering, better A/C, smoother gearbox. It's got way more power but it's so deceptively smooth that the SC "felt" more responsive. It's just a feel, mind you, and I know you can tweak a 993's suspension and make it very raw, but I missed the SC. Perfect balance between usability and rawness.... I still think the 993 is the most beautiful 911 out there, but somehow we did not gell ! |

I am trying to sell my 80 Euro SC with 128K on it. The first guy that called said in needed an engine rebuild be cause of the " high miles" on the engine. said he was a "Porsche expert", yea right.

I have an 87 Carrera with 183,XXX miles on the original everything. It runs strong and really feels like it will last for another 150,000 without a rebuild on the motor or transmission. There are many SC and Carrera owners with similar experiences. The SC's and Carrera's represent the zenith of quality in materials, workmanship, and reliable engineering in the 911 line IMO. Mike |

My SC died... blew the piston ring landing off #3 at about 95k miles. No direct event could be linked to it so the community consensus was bad gas... enh... we'll see how the next 100k miles go.

I got the same problem but I do have dripping in the left side. It started all of a sudden a couple of month ago. The oil on the rear deck lid and license plate is due to dripping oil being pick up by the air turbulation behind the car at speed. I got less splashing it it stay at low rev.
