My unusual airbox leak
Been chasing a little vac leak recently without success, hunting idle problem = rich mixture etc. Leaned it out a tad and it ran beautifully for a few days until it backfired and hissed menacingly as I was about to depart home one rainy evening.
First thought was "Pete Zimmerman was right" when he says in his book "the airbox is gonna get you one day , no matter what!" My box seemed OK and has the toilet lid and diffuser. Spent an hour in my underground park looking for troubles - found a disconnected thermovalve 2 pin connection (how?wtf?) . tried richening her up but engine wouldn't stay lit. Had to push it out of the park onto a flatbed in the end.. Well they found a finger sized port under the box , in line with the thumb below which had ejected a plug of rather brittle "aftermarket" white plastic putty! ![]() ![]() Not sure what this port is but maybe part of the former smog pump plumbing? Anyway now it's properly sealed and while they were there - all new gaskets , runner sleeves and the like so hopefully on Monday it will be running like a Swiss clock. Ticking over , but not hissing like an angry snake about to pounce!
