Hi guys,
Thanks for the diagnosis on the problem I'm having with 2nd and 4th gear (not being able to shift into them easily, and not staying in gear). Based on your feedback, I'm planning on replacing the coupler and the bushings. After looking at what is available and reading some threads, I wanted to see if you have any opinions on the following for a 1978 SC with the 915 transmission: Choosing between a WEVO Precision shift joint coupler VS. a Stromski Racing precision shift coupler. Deciding to put in a factory Porsche short shift kit or not. Choosing between the brass shift coupler bushings VS. the rubber ones. Finally, is there any good reason to add the Seine systems gate shift kit? I don't race the car and am comfortable in hitting gears as the transmission is currently laid out. Thanks in advace for the help. AIB |

When I got my car a few years ago the shifting was quite sloppy, most likely because of worn out guides and bushings. II did a refresh of all the bushings and couples while adding a factory short shift kit and the shifting was vastly improved as a result. I highly recommend a factory kit.

You might look into the Rennshift option, just change out the whole shifter assembly (Wevo rebuilds existing unit) and add the Rennshift shift coulpler. More cost but what an improvment, about $575.00 for the shifter and coupler package. IIRC
Also the shifter can be brought up higher with the optional longer shaft and has a 20-40% throw reduction you can change if you want more or less reduction. Siene and coupler are about $350 +or- No affiliation..

I'd start with the basics first. Replace the bushings in your coupler and the cup bushing under the shaft. Adjust it a few times so its nice and perfect. If you still do not like it, pursue the more expensive couplers and shift helping mechanisms.
A short shift kit will make your shifting stiffer and not necessarily easier. 915's do not like to be shifted quickly either. You end up jamming the deccel or accel blocks between the synchro and the dog tooth hub in the transmission... don't ask me how I know ![]() ![]() I think I have a rebuilt stock coupler laying around if you do not have the tooling to press in new bushings. Just pm me and we'll work it out. -Michael

+1. Replacing bushings throughout did wonders. No, it's not like my modern daily driver, but much, much better and good enough for me. At least for now (901 coupled to a 2.2 in my '75 targa)

I had a problem with the car popping out of 1st a while back. Was simply that the shift coupler was adjusted incorrectly and I was hitting rubber part of the shift area and not getting fully in to gear.
Adjusting the coupler and changing the Clutch Helper spring were huge helps. I also installed a shiftgate -which was nice. Sadly my transmission went last November and I had it rebuilt this year. Am getting the car back on the road soon - can't wait to see what a "like new" transmission feels like. Also replace the Shift Coupler bushings - MUCH MUCH tighter.

I like Wevo as a company. No idea re theirs vs. the Stomski, or who had the idea first...
You should either do the coupler repl. first and then just drive the car or just redo the bushings in the stock car. There are many other places to throw dollar bills at the car beside the ones you list and you will want to save up for a tranny rebuild anyway. |

I disagree. I like Sherwood, but the OP stated: "I don't race the car and am comfortable in hitting gears as the transmission is currently laid out."

I agree with a street car and no pressure shifts i.e..off camber shifts, higher revs yada yada just replace all the bushings on coupler, tunnel and shifter cup and do the Pelican Tech blueprint on the shifter. Adjust the coupler correctly and you have a smooth shifting unit. That's probably the best bang for your buck as long as the trans is in good working order.

On my 83SC I replaced the rubber bushings in the coupler with the brass ones from our host. Along with replacing all the others it made a huge difference in the feel. The brass are very snug but a little noisier as they don't dampen vibrations at all like the rubber. Small price to pay in my opinion for superior shifting throw/feel. It's been 3 years + and it still has the feel as the day I installed them.

+2 on the Wevo set up. I have an '86 (915). The first thing I did to it was replace all the bushings, put a Wevo kit in it, and a Wevo coupler. HUGE difference. It's like a new car now and has been for the past six years.
the Wevo is expensive, however after doing research and driving a couple of other cars, it was the best option for me. Good luck. |
