Road Trip Update - 3200 miles, home safe and sound!
Hello all,
Well we've been home for a few days, and I finally have the time to sit down on update you all on our trip. I did mean to send more updates from the road, but really we were having too much fun, AND luckily, it really was uneventful! First let me thank everyone who sent me contact info just in case, it really was kind of you. First off, our luggage did fit in the front of the 911, JUST: ![]() Funny thing we saw on the way back to San Francisco from picking up the car in Antioch, CA: ![]() And obligatory Golden Gate shot: ![]() Picture back in San Francisco, safe in the hotel basement: ![]() First day drive down CA Hwy1 to Carmel was incredible.... ![]() And onwards to Big Sur the next day: ![]() We then went across California, the Mohave desert, and into Arizona. I'm happy to report the A/C actually kept us nice and cool the whole trip. Sedona was beautiful, as was the Grand Canyon, the New Mexico landscape, the colorado rockies, the black hills of South Dakota, and of course the north shore of lake superior.... In all we did 3,200 miles, but over the course of 11 days with lots of breaks, sightseeing, etc. so it wasn't exactly a rigorous driving schedule, as it was meant to be a vacation after all. I really enjoyed driving the 911 the whole time, although I was wishing for quieter tires (Hard, old, Yoko ES100's apparently not that quiet even when new!) and I am pretty sure my car has larger torsion bars and stiffer bushings and maybe even semi solid motor mounts, it is extremely stiff and harsh on rough surfaces. Couple that with some pretty bad wind noise and we did wear ear plugs any time we were cruising above 65mph. We burnt somewhere between 1/2 and a full quart of oil over the course of the trip, and the only glitch was an idle air screw that backed itself out after 7 or 8 days, making the idle surge quite badly. Other than that adjustment I did not have to crack open the tool bag that I brought, not even once! In all it was a great trip, and I am really pleased with how it all worked out. Thanks again to everyone! ![]() |

Thanks everyone, now starts the process of making the car "mine" - figuring out all the mods and "improvements" done over the years.
LIKE....... what is that toggle switch for in the dash.... time to start tracing wiring! |

Just did a 3900 mile trip to the Canadian Maritimes (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoudland but took the Suburban. Not much room for 2 kayaks, 2 mt. bikes, and full camping gear in the 911.

Why so much wind noise? Cruising with windows down?

Congrats! Reminds me of my March 2007 trip to FL from MI and back. 3600 miles in the Targa in 6 days!

I wish I knew...... there seems to be a lot of wind noise coming from the general area of the dashboard, even though no combination of lever position enabled me to actually get any fresh air into the cabin... so I think more than one thing is amiss.
I did also adjust the trunk lid tighter as it was misaligned, that seemed to help a bit. I've ordered new door seals and "squeegees" and hope that might help too. And I haven't ruled out a new windsheild rubber. But all of that fell into "I'll fix that when we get home, here, Honey, here are your earplugs!!" Also contributing to the noise was the tires, and I think the car might have some kind of solid bushings in the front. Still haven't jacked it up yet to look. |
