HELP !!! How do I register the "idle" on my 911?
Very first time in here. Not very mechanically inclined. NEED SOME HELP PLEASE Simple question: how do I adjust the "idle" on my 911 engine

It's not a simple answer.
Without sounding harsh, you need to do a search on "idle adjustment" and you will find more information than you need. You may have a vacume leak, your A/F mixture may be off, the timing may be off, the fuel pressure may be off. If you simply "adjust the idle" you will not be correcting the cause of the problem. I suggest educating yourself about the fuel system before you make any adjustments at all, especially if you're not very mechanically inclined. You could do more harm than good. Purchase a Bentley's manual for your year 911 and begin with a big comfortable chair and read up on it. The search feature located in the upper right hand corner of the technical forum has lots of information. Again, no disrespect intended. Giving us a little more information about what the idle is doing could also help to diagnose the problem. Has it changed drastically in the last few days? Is it to high/to low? does it bounce up and down? What is it doing / or not doing? |
Hey sailchef thanx for your reply. any suggestion or comments are appreciated I just stopped at my Porsche mechanic and he replaced the "relay" Everything function well but the engine idle at around 2500 RPM and it is too high. Wanted just to try and adjust it down.

That's crazy high.... if it started that after he replaced the relay, he should take care of it for you.
There's a screw which adjusts the idle below the idle air controller ... the silver tube like thing with the two hoses coming out of it. Problem is if you just turn the screw the IAC will readjust itself and defeat your adjustment. You need to "jumper" a socket appearing behind the plastic cover that has the wingnut on the left side of the engine. Search the forum to see which two holes have to be jumpered... the socket is next to the wire that gets screwed into your ignition coil. The two slots in the socket that need to be jumpered are at the 1:00 and 6:00 positions. Somethings wrong, though... look for a vacuum hose left off or something else out of the ordinary. Just replacing a relay (fuel pump relay under the seat?) shouldn't mess your idle up like that. |
Here are a couple of posts on idle adjusting for the 3.2. '84-'86 should be 800rpm.
Simply, you need to put a wire jumper in to disable the Idle Control Valve, set the idle to 800rpm using the screw on the throttle body, remove the jumper and the DME should control the ICV to keep it at @800 rpm. Cleaning the ICV could help. Can you find out what relay was replaced? I think your throttle is not returning to closed when you take your foot off the gas. Open the engine cover, start the car, and have someone blip the throttle a few times. You should be able to see the throttle open and close. See if you can reach in and push it closed, there may be sometrhing along the line, like floor mat, cable in engine bay interfering with it closing.
If the throttle was returning to closed, it should be actuating the idle switch, which tells the DME you are at idle. if your idle speed was that high, your DME would be cutting the signal to drop the idle. |
