Installing Front Sway Bar 79 911SC
I am trying to install a 1986 Carrera front sway bar in my 79 911SC.
I can only get one side into the front bushings. the other side is about 1 inch too wide to get into the bushing and that is with pushing the opposide side as far as I can get it. What is the trick?? I've already spent 3 hours trying to get it in. help!! dog |
It is a living hell. I tried one to the point of almost having a stroke, walked away and came back the next day and it slipped right in?? Put lots of lube on it, the last time I loosened the 2 a-arm mounts to make it easier. No easy solution, just put lots of lube on it.

lube it up and put some muscle behind it.. It will flex.. Mine went right if right before i fainted!

If you are installing the Carrera front sway bar with the arm arms in place, you need to bend the sway bar ends inwards (like pulling a bow). Use a Come-along or a mechanical gear hoist to do the work. Once the distance between the two (2) is sufficiently shortened, line up the other unmounted end in position to the rubber bushing and gradually release the tension of the cable. Find a pair of strong and properly fitted U-bolts to hold the sway bar's ends. I recommend wrapping some masking tape to prevent damage on the coating or paint where you mount the U-bolts or clamps. my stock 18.8 bar was a ball breaker to muscle 15 years ago
i have a touch oversteer and not sure if i should install the 20 SC/carrera or 22 carerra front bar? |

I tried a cable come a long and the u bolts kept slipping so I guess I'll have to do it the way Wayne mentions in his book and remove one of the A arms and slip it in.

Each time I do something on my car I learn stuff.
I decided to do this the right away, I loosened the bolts for the A-arm and the sway bar just went into place. I also saw how easy it was to remove the torsion bar so the front suspension is no longer a mystery. Do it the right way and you will learn!!! |
Front Sway Bar

Use a 3/4" nylon Rachet strap with two rubber hooks...but not the way you think. 1.Shove one side (passenger side) of the sway bar into the new bushing as far as you can...two inches past the bushing will do. 2. Set the other end (driver side) on top the A-Arm next to the bushing...it will be about 3/4" to 1"off and need that much compression. 3. Hook one rubber hook on to this end driver side from below. 4. Hook the other rubber hook to the passenger side front tow hook! 5. Rachet it in until the driver side sway bar end can drop down and slip into the bushing. 6. Don't release the tension until you align the sway bar left right to about 1/2" poking through the bushing on each side 7. Use lots of spray silicone in the bushings. That looks like a good method,. Better than mine using a 4ft pry bar with a padded end while suspension was loaded on alignment rack….. those 22mm bars are a fight.
