911 SC Window Tint Removal
My 1980 911 SC was a California car and has tint on the rear side and rear windows. Removal from the side windows should be fairly straight forward with a heat gun and patience, then goo gone... Any suggestions for the rear window and not damaging the rear window defroster?
Thanks |
yeah, you don't want to mess up the rear defroster lines.
There's 2 ways: 1) tape up some plastic garbage bag material to the inside of the window, spray ammonia in it to soak the tint, and leave in the sun to heat up (or use your heat gun to heat up). 10 minutes of heat on the ammonia, and the tint will peel right off. 2) You can use a steamer to steam it off. People have apparently had luck with that. I've found it to be "ok" some of the time, but not so great on stubborn tint. I've found the ammonia method easily removes ANY tint. |
here's what I did on the back window of my targa... lay a black garbage bag (or bags) cut into a sheet on the back window. Generally cut with scissors the shape of the rear window, larger is better. Spray some ammonia on the back window and place the plastic garbage bag right on the glass from the inside - it will stick. Park it in the sun, wait a bit.
Try peeling the old tint away with your fingers, if it doesn't peel, lift off a little bit of the garbage bag and if it is dry spray some more. Set it in the sun. Eventually it WILL lift the tint and second clear layer of tint. Don't get too impatient as you'll just separate the color sheet from the clear - then you have a lot work on your hands getting the clear layer off - using fingernails. |
I had tint on my 1984 that was put on by a PO.
I found it cost effective to get a professional in to remove it from the sides and rear window. He used a spray and a steamer to remove it. He did a great job and was very careful not to damage the rear window and he covered the interior also with cloths.....probably helped that I was loking over his shoulder the whole time.....:D :D :D Cheers, Geoff. |
I've done the ammonia / garbage bag system, worked great.
The tint almost fell off. |
You can buy ohmic heating paint to redraw the defroster lines if you nick it. Good luck.

When I removed the tint off my rear window I peeled off what I could and wiped the residue off w/ mineral spirits on a rag.

I used to install tint for a living. Best way to do the side windows it a singles edge razor blade and dilutes amonia mixture.
The back window you can either use a scotch brite pad or steel wool, with the same mixture. This will take all of the glue off after you peal the tint off |
