No start fuel problem question???

My 85 would not start today after running perfectly recently. I replaced the fuel pump relay with no change. I can not hear the fuel pump when I turn the key. Removing the test port cap and ball from the fuel line shows only a dribble of fuel. Crossing the relay terminals 30 and 87b on the relay socket starts the fuel pump. Any suggestions for next steps? Does that mean the pump is ok and its electrical? Im not good at electrical. thanks Doug

an update The fuse is ok for the fuel pump, everything and I mean everything is new on the engine, temp sensors, position sensors, entire fuel system components ect , ect. It is however the original fuel pump. Its the lack of pump noise when I turn the key and lack of pressure in the line that points me to the fuel system. Any ideas? thanks Doug

I am not sure but isnt the fuel pump controlled by the DME on Motronic cars? Just an idea. I could be way off base...

The fuel pump is controlled by the DME relay.

Doug---

If you have a suspicion that the fuel pump is the culprit, you can do the following:

Temporarily remove either the top or bottom hose to your Idle Control Valve, vigorously squirt some ether or carb cleaner into the open hose, and quickly reconnect. Quickly move to your ignition switch and start the motor.

If the motor starts and runs for a short period, then you have a fuel starvation issue...probably a bad fuel pump.

If the motor still refuses to start after introducing the carb cleaner into the intake, then you probably have an ignition issue (lack of spark).

I have jumped the DME relay before on a bad fuel pump and heard noise...it was weak, but I heard it...and I still wound up replacing the pump.

So now for the dumb question...have you tried using a known good DME relay? You state you replaced the fuel pump relay, but I'm not sure they are the same thing.

I have tried another good dme and it made no change, the fuel pump fuse up front is also good. I am staying with the fuel problem because I expected to see some pressure when I took the fuel test cap off, I saw only a dribble. Also I am on my own and dont have anyone to turn the car over as I check for spark. The car ran perfectly when I put it in the garage last night. I thought the fuel pump should run when you turn the key but from what I read tonight the engine has to be running for it to go so possibly I have to find a helper to expand the search to other possibilities.

you can do the fuel test that I previously outlined by yourself...it's quick and simple...hose off, hose on, turn key...takes 10-15 seconds.
