Quick eng/trans drop question

Guys,
I did a lot of reading on this topic last night and frustrated because not a lot of info on numerical steps on how the drop engine and transmission together. Everyone talks about how its better to keep it together but most descriptive posts, including the tech article, are on the the steps it takes to do it separately. Two easy and clear questions. I have disconnected everything else.

74/915 drop together.

1. I can easily remove the clutch cable, must I remove the arms as well to separate the units after the drop. There is a lot of arm discussion on this and I dont understand when the cable comes off so easily.

2. In regards to the transmission bolts, do I just remove the two bolts holding the unit to the car body? And do i need to remove the cross plate that it is resting on or does the unit just slide out across it and it remains in place.

Thanks, I love this place.

Have you seen this?

Pelican Technical Article: 911 Engine Removal Made Easy

Also see Wayne's 101 book.

I'd remove the two big trans mount bolts. Don't know your clutch. Take lots of pictures and it will go back together more easily. Ken

Of course I have, but it doesnt break down steps if you leave the transmission mounted to the engine so it does not address my questions.

I too have a '74 and have dropped the motor/trans. more than a few times. I think it is easier to drop them as a unit instead of leaving the trans. and dropping just the engine.

1. if by "arms" you mean the clutch arm that the cable attaches to - no, you don't have to remove it.

2. Yes, just remove the 2 bolts that hold the trans. crossmember to the body. The cross member can stay attached to the trans. itself.

It is all quite evident when you get under the car and start looking around. I have a step-by-step list that I typed up for engine removal for my car. I'll see if I can get it in postable form.

Here you go. My list for removing my '77 2.7L engine and 915 trans. out of my '74 911. This was before I had a lift and had to do some strategic jacking to get clearance etc... Hope it helps.

Wow, thank for the effort. I'm sure this will be useful for others for years to come. I like how you addressed the tool size. You dont have a list to put it all back it in with torque measurements by chance :)

Thanks again, I'm set

I do actually, but it's all hand written notes on my hard copies!
