Half shafts (CV joints): Question on direction on reinstall.

I am about to repack the CV joints in a pair of SC axle shafts. These are low mile 'shafts that I purchased from a Pelican. The axles were sent without any Left / Right / Directional guidance - I do not know which is the trans and which is the wheel end. However, the joints look beautiful - very good shape but for new grease.

Are they OK to go in any way I choose (these are SC, non-stub axle 'shafts)? As always I will repack each joint separate (no intermixing).

If you knew how they were installed on the PO's car I would tell you to re-install that way.

Seeing as how you don't have those facts, it doesn't matter how you install them.

Or more to the point, if they SHOULD be installed (I am sure yes, but...?).

So back to question: Is it a problem to install without knowledge of original rotation? Does this question boil down to the state of the CVs?

No, inspect, grease, install.

They can go either way...

Hey guys - not to beat this to death but cleaned up the axles and there is a small green bit of paint on each axle, towards one end.

Is this a factory item, to indicate a preferred installation direction (green = trans or?) or is this just a PO moment?

Thanks!
John

Like Joe Bob says, either way. Some people actually reverse them to get new bearing surfaces. You can do this by switching sides, same rotational direction, but the old outside is now the new inside.
