What level of automation

What level of automation did the factory use to build these cars? The spot welds on my '88 Carrera coupe seem inconsistent at best from one side of the car to the other. Also, some of the weld beads are just plain ugly. Unless my car was a major rebuild, there's no way a robot could of done most of these.

22 years ago robots were not used everywhere like on today’s cars.

It would be interesting to see the real answer to your question. I think that your car and my 85 were mostly human built. There are many inconsistencies from side to side on many 911s.

Link provides some basic but good info.

Check the various tabs in the upper left (especially vehicle assembly). The dates of the change over to a more modern body fab building happened right around (probably after) the time yours was built. Said that until then cars were moved around on skids and they were stationary (vs. continuous movement) while assemble stages were performed. Also says the last 911 to leave the old facility was July 1989. Robots were used in the new facility.

Dan Pechtel should use the scene at 3:11 as an advertisement.
