Powder Coat Fuchs?

My fuch wheel need new black paint. I would love to get them powder coated and never have to deal with paint again.

Can this be done?

Anybody done it?

Thanks!

~Max

We have done a number of sets at the shop for race cars in various colors and street cars with no problems. They look great and hold up better than paint.

Why?

I used Rust-Oleum #7777 Satin Black many years ago. Still looks like new.

I have read at least one race wheel manufacturer suggest not to powder coat track wheels. The coating thickness won't easily reveal incipient cracks. For street use, YMMV.

Did you sand off the old paint first?

No, just scuffed it up.

Used fine grit paper.

I agree. Here's my DIY with 7777 and Matte Nickel ( I'll have to check the number)

This may be nit-picking but powder coatings are paint. They are resins, additives and pigments just like liquid paints. The resins and pigments are baked in sheets then milled to a particular particle size.

+1 used the same on my 15's and they looked awesome until the day I sold them and probably still do.

...".incipient".....nice word Sherwood. I will ask my expert, one of which is a "Cal-Tech'er" about the incipient crack syndrome.

Curtis,
This is not to be confused with the incipient wise-crack syndrome, of which I am usually poised to contribute.

Mine have been powder coated for 6 years and show no signs of aging. Great way to go. If going with a black color select satin

I was surprised to see a thread about fuchs without Al Reed being mentioned. He does powder-coating too.

I rattle canned my wheels and they had rockchips from day one. Since Powdercoat, they look better than new.

My new 911 friend here in Florida is One of our fellow posters He is an engineer at NASA and he created a way to basically dip his wheels and they looked great

He put some thick material behind and inside the wheel (poster board or cardboard, can not remember)

Poured the paint inside covering the spokes..... after a time .... he made a hole in the backing and let the paint drain into a container placed under the wheel

His wheels looked great.... leave it to an engineer

This wheel has powdercoated centers and polished lips. Work done by Trudesign in Denver.

The whole wheel(s) on my car are PC black and some hate it and some love it. To each his own I guess.
