I have already posted on this topic, but wanted to show what a turbo S tail looks like on a SC. The before picture on Peter Zimmermann's post is exactly how I want my 911 to look. I would also like to go with the black centered Fuchs. Beautiful car Mr. Zimmermann.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1283060378.jpg

I actually read somewhere that the duck gave the optimal downforce on the rear of the car, and along with the chin spoiler, gave the best aerodynamics. But - the german government thought the duck had too sharp of corners, so Porsche moved to the "Tea Tray", "Whale Tail", bbq grill platter because, with the big rubber rim, it had a more friendly profile.

Personally I like to:

Chase Tail
Tail Stand
Tell a tall Tail
Tail gate at Daytona (24 not that roundy round stuff)
Get a little tail happy from time to time
So well I guess I am a tail man....

even though my avatar indicates otherwise.....I shall rectify that soon....

Nope. Ducks, tea trays and whale tails are all spoilers, not wings. Spoilers don't provide downforce. Spoilers reduce lift by disrupting/spoiling the smooth airflow (the smooth flowing, fast moving air is at a lower pressure than the air above it) over the rear of the roof.

Wings aren't spoilers. They're airfoils that provide lift on an airplane and downforce (upside down lift) when they're used upside down on a car.

The airflow under the wing on a car is at a lower pressure than the slower moving air under that air which creates a partial vacuum and since the Earth can't be sucked up to attempt to fill the vacuum, the car is literally sucked down, thus "downforce".

If one was to fcuk up and mount a wing upside down on a 911, what they'd have would be two airplane wings, the 911 body being the second one, and lift at the rear would be increased.

Air dams at the front of the car impede the flow of air beneath the car, which in this case of being forced between the underside of the car and the road, builds high pressure - not good because that will lighten the car. Thus the Venturi vents at the rear of high performance cars, which compress, then free the under-car air flow at a higher speed = additional low pressure to aid in keeping the rear of the car down. It is for this reason that, from all reports, if one is to install a spoiler or a wing at the rear, an air dam must be installed at the front or a dangerous imbalance will result at speed.

BTW, I am not an aerodynamicist - I can barely even spell the word...but that's how I understands it. :)

My opinion - for what it's worth

If the model you have did not come with a tail, the purist in me says no tail. But if it was a legitimate option for that model year, then I would have no problem with adding.
I personally prefer the factory stock look.

A lot of good lookin' tail in this thread.

ducks in a row

last week someone posted a photo of a line of ducktailed units and i could ALMOST see my 86 targa in that lineup (w/ a chin strap).

my fuchs are flat black (powder?) and i am thinking along the same lines (flat/matte/powder black) for both the DT and the chin spoiler. the car is iris blue w/ a navy interior. i think a flat black DT and chin would go well w/ that color scheme.

I will agree that the tail should be period specific. However, I live in the tropics. The space inside my turbo tail houses the ac condenser with fans. It is shrouded so that the hot condenser air does not mix with the incoming engine cooling air. The air exits out the bottom of the tea tray through a grill I made. All this in the hope of extra cooling.

Any interest in selling the factory duck?

WIL84911 09-10-2010 06:17 AM

Put on a tail, took it off then decided I want some other tail... so I'm now a tail person... here's mine with the tail and another tail-less 3.2.
