911 SC Targa - Stripes or no stripes?

I have recently purchased a 1978 black 911 sc targa. The paint looks great from 15 feet but close up it isn't perfect. However, I don't want to have to do a paint job for a few years but want to spruce it up.
Opinions and or photos would be appreciated regarding the application of stripes (probably applied by way of decals) on an impact bumper 911 (targa). My 911 is black and I was thinking of applying dark grey stripe(s) down the center of the vehicle (rear engine lid and front trunk). If any of you have done this and have photos they would be most welcome. Thanks

dpixxi is offering magnetic stick on stripes for 911s. I know it is also possible to get vinyl graphics, and there are a lot of pictures of striped 911s in some of the picture post threads.

Do a search on stripes, and you will find some pictures.

I just put center stripes and side decals on my 1976 911s and am very happy with the new look. Have gotten several compliments already. I jut wanted a sligtly different look after 10 years of ownership. Hope this helps in your decision.

This is one of the magnetic stripe cars, I like it this wide myself.

Of course those rear flares are going to make any 911 look awesome.

Love the look - and yes, the rear flares give it a very dramatic look

Thanks for the reply and the photos. You did a great job in dressing up the car. Love the look and it's the look I'm considering. DJ

My own sense is that a Targa is a lily that does not require gilding.

As for stripes, I think that if I were to do it, I'd do sides, but not deck lid, roof and engine cover. But that's just me. Your results may vary.

Thanks, I am also now considering adding a white 20 inch racing circle to both sides to give it more of a rally look. I photoshoped an image of what it would look like. The way i look at it, since it is vinyl, i can always remove it if i get tired of it.

I feel the composition of the Targa is such that center stripes may create confusion. I am sure you have searched like I have and found little or nothing showing a center stripe on a Targa so I can't say for sure

Having a black Targa may let you get away with a stripe given the black top is less of a contrast to the car color. The gray stripe idea also tones it down. Get some masking paper and paint it gray and see how it looks.

The side Carrera decal always looks good though.

I think the lines of the Targa are busy enough without stripes. YMMV

Best,
Tom

Bob, you are correct in that there are very few targas with stripes. I have collected hundreds of pictures of 911's with stripes and other decals and i only have seen two targas with the stripes:

Long nose has a toned down contrast and looks good from this angle. The stripe is also complimented by the window trim. Looks way more integrated than signal orange on white.

Hello OZ...I make hood stripes in both magnetic and vinyl in any color or style that you would want. My website is: MagnaGrafik.com. I have just finished a new set of historic stripes for black cars. They are based on the 936/76 Martini Black Widow. See attached. Also, the white 911 above is my 89 930 with the magnetic stripe on the hood. Wayne has given me permission to show you my work. Thanks - Dan

I don't believe that to be correct. I contacted Mike and he referred me to another individual whom I sent an email to and never received a response. Mike can chime in hear but he informed me specialized graphics as such he referred out. YMMV
