The airbox in my '74 had plenty oil in it, too, the first time I checked it. The generous PO had filled the oil tank right up to the full mark on the dipstick. Now at around half full things are fine.

If you want to get over the oil on the airbox for a 74 to 77 and overfill isnt the problemyou need to getSC cover from the airflow sensor to the throttle body 930.110.358.05, the hose and connection to run to the oil tank neck replacing the hose from the neck to the airbox that leaves the oil in the airbox to drain to the top of the engine or into the small tube forward fo the sheet metal.

#1, drain some oil out.
#2, check/replace hose as suggested here.

I think you have overfill problem, sounds like it. Run is 1/2 to 1/4 way above min on dipstick. Hopefully will solve your problem and will prove to be one of the easiest fixes you've ever done to solve problem with your car. You already know this, but check oil on level ground with car running and up to temp.

Good luck.

Here is a picture of the original dip stick for a '74 with the replacement stick used when changing the sending unit in the oil tank. You can see the lower oil level on the new stick.

Not that much, a complete oil change in my '74 emptying both the tank and crank case it takes 11 quarts and will be just below the full mark on new stick. If you fill half way between full and add on the old style stick that will work good. Just make sure the oil is warm enough.
