Strange Paint Problems (Pics added)
 

Hello everyone,

I am posting this without pics for now as I have not taken any of the issue yet. I will be as descriptive as I can.

Car is a 1979 SC that I purchased about 7 years ago as a project, it lives inside the garage and stays covered with a dust cover.

It was painted just prior to my purchase factory Swartz Met. which appears to be a dark greay metal flake but the germans call it black metal flake I guess.

Anyhow the Problem:

There are large areas appearing in various parts of the car. Hood, doors, front fenders so far which appear to be "runs" in the paint under the clear coat, they are very large some the size of a softball and somewhat circular in nature. I have seen cars which were painted that the guy dripped water/sweat on the paint and these look similar but a lot bigger.

A friend of mine said that it is from a chemical reaction between the paint and the primer and it is under the clear coat, does this sound right/possible ???

If I have the car repainted will they have to go to bare metal to fix it or just re prime and paint with proper materials ?

Without seeing a picture, this sounds like "sag" or "drip" in the basecoat . It can happen for a couple of reasons, but a very common one is not quite enough drying time between coats. Then the painter throws the clear on and weight pulls the base coat (and of course the clear coat) into a big sag. You cut any sag out of the clear coat, but the sag in the base coat remains. After all, if you cut deep enough into the paint to remove the sag in the basecoat, then you have NO clear coat left.

Sand and re-shoot. You don't have to go to metal as long as the paint has adhered to the metal itself. Just got to get it smooth. If the issue is isolated to a couple of panels, just do those and pay for a blend to the adjacent panels.

If your friend is right and it was an incompatible product, you will probably need to sand down to original paint.

Is it a sag in the paint, or is it more likely patterns in the metal-flake?

Ok it has been raining here all day so I could not get the car out in the daylight to take pics but I took a couple with my flash camera they are not very good.

The "round" spot is typical of what is happening and is about the size of a baseball there are quite a few like this happening all over the car.

The "long" one is about fourteen inches long and about one and a half wide.

They are definately under the clear in the paint itself, they are not bubbling up through the clear.

Anyone ???

This looks remarkably similar to the problem I started having with my paint several years ago. Same situation (repaint and under a cover most of the time).

What is really strange about it is they did not start for a year or so after the car was painted and they continue to crop up on the car, fenders, doors and hood being the only place so far. Some are quite large and circular others are long and narrow.

I know exactly what you mean. Mine did not start appearing until about 5 years later. And now they continue to spread like some disease.

I am rather sure it was something in the prep/paint, because the same shop also painted my hood and bumper several years before the repaint so I did not have them re-sprayed, and those parts are fine.

Looks like a contaminant under the paint. For instance, silicone (in many cheap quick detailing sprays) will seep down into the lower paint levels and cause fish eye and runs.
