1972 911t restore value

Hello. I have an all original 72. Needs paint and interior restore. Tough question to answer, but is there a max I should invest to keep it within market value?

In other words, is $35k invested too much?

Thanks for the advice.

You need to read Stephan Wilkinson's book "The Gold-Plated Porsche - How I Sunk a Small Fortune into a Used Car, and Other Misadventures"!!

$35K is about half-way there!! :D

yes, that is way too much for a "T" -- unless of course you will do it for your own enjoyment

where are you located? I have good (& cheap) contacts here in SoCal. Do you have pics of your car?

I agree.

But paint and interior shouldn't hit 35k unless you are talking rust.........

No, as long as you don't mind losing money. :D

in europe value is about 25.000 euro

Paint and interior is one thing, but more importantly, how is the engine? A rebuild will cost you from $5-$10K (easy).

thanks for the help.

I would not put more than $20k into a 72 T. I am at that same crossroad with mine, it runs and drives, engine is sound (upgraded to 2.7 heads and 2.4S pistons), but paint, body and exhaust system work will cost me another $10k. I plan to spread that out over the next 5 years.

one more tidbit...

if you dump lots of $$ into motor & tranny, those can easily be swapped to a different car later on

of course, by then you may have de-T'ed your T so much that you wouldn't replace it with a real RS

I've thought about doing the prep work, but I've never done it before. Is it difficult to remove trims, lights, bumpers, etc? I'd leave windows for the experts. I can sand and repair a few chip spots. Any good manuals out there with details on parts breakdown/reassembly?

Keep in mind, I'm a rookie.

Thx

In this market you can get a near perfect car for 35-40 so sell yours and save your self the loss

Try these links. One of them is a brief of mine.

In my opinion, it really depends on what your definition of "value" is.

Fellow rookie.

I may have missed it, but are you considering an amateur self-restoration job to keep the car or do you hope to sell it after your work?

313green 09-05-2010 08:22 AM

Keep it. I'm not painting, just prep.

wgwollet 09-05-2010 08:43 AM

A good paint job is very expensive .........I am seeing nice rust free CA cars for 30k or less with private owners....dealers want more......first the engine, it needs much to restore SSI heat exchangers are about $1200........its ALWAYS more to restore.........buy the best you can effort
