Speedometer trouble 83 911

I posted speedometer problems awhile ago, finally got it into my mechanic a couple of days ago. He checked out everything and the magnet in the transaxle that sends the signal has broken off. He says it is probably lying in the transmission somewhere. To fix it he wants 5,000 dollars he has to remove engine and trans axle. Anyone have another solution?

You need another mechanic NOW. Unless that broken magnet costs $3500, you are on a path to get raped. A professional can R&R an engine in just a few hours total - maybe less. A decent rebuilt 915 is $2500 - complete with functioning magnets.

Unless I am out-of-my-mind wrong - and others will post exactly that, if so - you just need to find an honest mechanic.

Unless I am mistaked (happens often at my age!) you can pull the covers to the diff and refit the magnets without dropping the engine and box.

Maybe someone can confirm?

Ok, this is what I am thinking see the picture below.

Notice that the ring holding the magnets for the speedo are at the opposite end to the crown wheel.

You should be able to drain the oil and pull the diff cover off, after disconnecting the driveshafts of course.

I think that when I did mine the crown wheel was directly on the other side of the cover, that being the case you should be able to pull the diff out far enough to clean the area of the speedo ring and refit the magnets (JB weld?) I found my magnets in the bottom of the case with plenty of the original "glue" on them.

Pretty sure you must remove the differental from the trans. to change this part. It is on the right side and the cover is on the left side. Yo can make sure the sensor is working and in the hole on the right side above and forward of the axle (hope the mech. did this already).

You could be right James, I did mine whilst I was rebuilding the transmission so it's hard to remember if it could be done as a stand alone job.
