Question Still curious- Upside dwon gas nozzle requirement...

So a nice 996 pulled up next to me this morning and was attempting to get gas. He could not get the nozzle to lock in the flow mode so I suggested he too turn the gas nozzle upside down and - Voila. It worked. He and I both had the big old nozzle turned upside down in order to be able to lock the gas flow to the "on" position.

What is the deal with this>??

The bend in the filler neck causes "splash-back" which trips the over-flow feature in the nozzle.

I've been filling my SC like that for years. I get the strangest looks. Then I tell them "its german" like that makes a difference.

Yup, curve in the filler neck means that when the gas nozzle is inserted normally the gas hits the side of the filler neck at a steep angle and activates the overflow shut off. By flipping the nozzle upside down the flow of gas is straight down the filler tube so there's no back pressure on the nozzle until the tank really is full.

Awesome - I was wondering if there was a "fix" for that. Now I know!

It's a "flow issue".......more than 10 g/pm causes splash back on certified delivery systems. They required a restrictive filler neck.

The euros have an issue with conversions.......8 g/pm is a about average. Since moving from CA with vapor recovery asa norm, I see more issues with my 83 SC.....just my private experience and my PAST regulatory experience.....

How about saying it was Australian and it requires the opposite flow?

Is it really that difficult to see "why"?......I mean....think of a normal car. The tank is down below, the filler neck bends toward the center of the car curving down...matching the curvature of the gas pump nozzle.

We've all obviously seen the the way the filler line curves in a 911, anytime the trunk is open. Doesn't curve trhe same way. Actually the opposite way. So......turn the gas handle around to "opposite" too, so the flow of the gas pump nozzle matches the curvature of the car's receiving nozzle. Pretty simple actually once you look.

I just pull the nozzle out an inch from "deep" and it flows fine, facing "normal".

Or, click it to low flow so you have time to wash the windows.

Besides, with the nozzle typically inserted, the side of the nozzle handle is very close to the edge of the filler opening. Too close, cushioned nozzle handle perhaps notwithstanding.

Filled my old DB4 like that for 30 years cause the other way it would scratch the paint under the filler, due to the way the fender was formed.

My 90C2 street car fills up with the nozzle upside down, but my 90 C2 street car turned track car (still uses stock filler and gas tank) fills up fine with the traditional method. Go figure.
