Remove Rear View Mirror

How does one remove the rear view mirror without shattering the window. Mine was installed with an adhesive pad that is had as a rock. During the hot Texas summer I tried to get a razor blade under it with zero success.

What year car? I don't know if all window mounted rear view mirrors are the same but on an 87, the mirror slides down over a fitting that comes installed on the windshield. To get the mirror off, you push up on the mirror and it should come off. I had to tap it lightly with a screw driver to get mine to come off.

I think he wants to remove the rear view mirror mount as his windshield was hit with a rock, and is now going to replace his windshield too.

I believe there is some rear view mirror adhesion remover you can get from your local Kragen, NAPA, etc.

This is usually right next to the adhesion kits for rearview mirrors.

Have fun!

I know I will, when I do this (again!).

I have removed three from P-car windshields using a putty knife. Two were fastened with windshield adhesive and one with silicon. The silicon wasthe most difficult. Just go slow, work your way around the mounting bracket, and don't put too much pressure.

The problem at hand is that I don't want to replace the windshield now, just the mirror. The recent mirrors do, in fact, attach to a wedge glued to the glass. Unfortunately, mine isn't that type. The foot of the mirror is larger than the more recent mirrors and is, correctly or not, attached via an adhesive pad. With the razor blade there was no sign of it giving so I quit while I was ahead.

Ya'all are making me braver. I got some adhesive remover. I'll spend this beautiful day with my trusty putty knife.

Thanks for your help.

Hello

The adhesive pad is the correct item ( cost is 2$ in germany ).

In 78 (?) Porsche changed the wide base mirror to the dot base mirror ( like in 924 / 928 )

Roland,
You are absolutely right on the mirror mounting. Somebody may have replaced a windshield and a shop just installed the wrong base on my '79. After 5 years of my driving it on Dallas' famous Central Expressway while it was being rebuilt, I went though four windshields on other cars and will soon replace this one. These huge rock haulers are a menace.

Thanks

Hello

The story is that the new screens all come with the coinsized mirror base dot except you order the screen for the old cars witch are not stocked and come speratly ( needs more time and costs more )

On the aftermarked I only know supliers for the new screens so you can´t order pre 80´s versions. Mostly we go for the new mirror ( Can be picked up used from the 924 for a handfull $ ) as they last longer then the cars..

Grüsse
