early vin number. need help
Hello I am looking to purchase a project car. I have found the vin number and all it says is 455943. Any help in decoding this would be great. The owner thinks that it is a 72-73 but it definitly is not, it is earlier. Thank you

455 are numbers for 1966 911's. I believe it will also include the 912 models.
Engine numbers??

That is the part number for the case. Engine number is to the right of the fan. A 1973 engine # starts with 653 for carbed motor and 613 for injected or CIS.
Is the motor in the car? Trans is an issue as well. The pre-69 cars are short wheelbase (SWB) and the 69 and later are long wheelbase (LWB) so the trans and half shafts for the 66 need to match a SWB car.

911210 should be a 1972 coupe. Check the right side of the parts car for an oil door similar to the gas door on the left front fendr. It is a one off year feature.
As far as using a 915 in the SWB car, you should do a search (upper right button) for threads on SWB-915 conversions. There should be lots of reading. Might be easier to fix the parts car than convert the SWB to fit the 915. I've never done it but there is a lot to it from what I've seen discussed here. Nice problem to have if the purchase price for the whole lot is worth it. You could always sell the 915 trans and find a SWB 901 trans to work for you.

Vin 455943
Hello Brandon..
I put this VIN into Google and found your posting. I have the owners manual and Service Book for that car. It is a 1966 912 originally sold to Mr. A.F. Anctil of Keene NH on May 14, 1966. I also have all the other paperwork that accompanied the car in the original clear vinyl folder. I have a 1968 912 and bought this stuff at a swap meet in Wisconsin 15 years ago. Glad to hear the car is still out there. Did you ever buy it or where is it now? Regards, Rick Ronzani |
