89 Carerra stalls when oil cap removed

I have a 1989 Carrera with the 3.2 engine. I just got it. When I try to check the oil with the engine running and remove the oil filler cap it stalls. Doesn't matter if it is hot or cold. It seems like there is a substantial amount of vacuum in there. Any idea what the problem is and what part needs to be examined/replaced?

There is supposed to be a vacuum as oil vapor gets sucked into the air box by way of a hose. If your engine is dying and assuming your idle is set at 800 rpm or above, you have a vacuum leak somewhere else. Check all your vacuum lines and connections. Also, the intake manifold gaskets are notorious for heat shrinking as they age. Sometime you can tighten the intake bolts back down to spec and stop the leak.

The car may be missing the in-line restrictor.

It should be located in the hose that runs from the oil tank(near the cap) to the back of the engine.

This can also cause a huge vacuum leak.

restrictor, 930.107.289.00, goes into the hose that goes into the boot to the throttle body, usually the hose from the neck of the oil fill, should be the answer.

Idle adjustment hex screw (with or without jumper)
Besides checking for the restrictor, you should also make sure that your base settings at idle are correct. The base idle on your '89 chip is higher than the 800 rpm used on the '86 and earlier Carreras. I believe it is 880 rpm.

I'm with Ed here. My '89 idles a bit lower than 880 and I need to get this checked (and set).

I still bet it's that damned oil restrictor (missing). First time I changed my hoses in that area, I almost forgot about it (at the time I didn't even know about it), and my son-in-law (the master Toyota Tech) happened to pick up the old hose [[[while I was beginning to install the new one]]]] and reminds me to put this damned thingy back into the new hose....saved my arse from a headache.....

now,..on to idle settings..................

Best,
Doyle
