Question Porsche 917K for World Sports Cars: help me out with performance

I'm Jille Berends, and I'm a 3d-animation-artist.

At the moment I'm working in a
team of 23 artists like me, to create a professional addon for a computer game.
This addon will contain 60 supercars, including a Porsche 917 Kurzheck, being
made by myself.

To create this car, I used the blueprints I found on the Pelicanparts-site, and it looks really cool.

But to get a realistic race-car, it's not only the looks that have to do it, but
also the performance and handling of the car. Since I never raced a real 917, I
cannot put this information into the game, so I need some details about the
performance. That's why I send you this email, to ask if you have any
information about the performance of this car.
Here's what I need to get a realistic handling:

- a torque curve
- gear ratios
- rev limiter rpm
- lat acceleration
- top speeds in each gear

I really hope someone can provide me with this info. Thanks in advance for it. You will get a copy of the car, when it's done, as a reward for helping me

To give you an idea of what the car looks like at the moment (it's not finished yet!) here's a picture:

This is the latest officially released screenshot of the car. At the moment it's almost done, but I cannot release a picture of it yet.
It still needs a paintjob. It will be in Salzburg painting. If you have any usefull pictures or scanned scale-model decals I can use, please post them here too.

Thanks in advance,
Regards, Jille

Jille, I am sure someone here will have most if not all the answers to your questions.

But if this is an AUTHORIZED game by PORSCHE I am sure that they can give you more info than you need?

Not to say that I only play AUTHORIZED games

Are you going to give us Pelicanheads a deal when the game debuts?

Shawn

Well, the game does not have a full license, that's why
When the car is finished, I will give it to the people here.

ps: a conversion for other racing games will be done on request.

Zendalar, thanks for the pictures I didn't know that there had to be a spare-wheel in the back

ps2: There's a 917/30 in it too! I can release pics of that soon...

And... An early shot of a 962C (not made by me)

If you have any info about these cars, or blueprints of a 962, or of a 917/30, please post them, we really need them

Porsche Crest

I like the blue one. Think it's the 917 Can Am with 1100 HP and they used to call it the widowmaker. It's a 5.4 liter aircooled flat 12. I think it could reach 385 km/h in some races.

Does the computer game have a homepage yet?

Jille,

If you're the real deal, as it appears you are, I'm sure that you could contact the likes of Vic Elford and Dickie Attwood, and they'd be happy to help you. 917s were unique in some ways and my feeling would be that no amount of torquecurve data, etc will give you the complete picture.

Good luck with the project!

There are some nice 917K shots on the site below. Search by car type.

There are a few visual enhancements you might consider on the 917K for the 1970 season depending on what race the game simulates.

1. Daytona roof.
2. Extra airfoil section run at the rear.
3. Flared rear for bigger 17" wheels.
4. Tiny rear winglets (not the 71 style fins)

Those are some kick-ass images - I will definetely be keeping an eye out for this game (I'm a Gran Tourismo junkie, keeps me sharp for racing season).

My advice is to get a copy of the movie Le Mans. There's a ton of on board 917 footage in that movie - this is old news to regular posters on this BBS.

Is this the same "World Sports Car" that was supposed to be out mid 2001? IF so, do you have an updated release date?

Here is a preview:

Not sure what a "Porsohe" is, but it looks cool.

whoa

Jille this is very cool.

Any chance these cars can be used in the PC game "Grand Prix Legends"??? pretty please!

I haven't seen the latest racing sims (WSC, F1, etc), but GPL has every track from the '67 GP season (including all of the Nürburgring). I dream of driving a 917 around the old Spa....

I have some photos of one of the 2 917/30s and a couple 917k at the Monterey Historics in '98, and my brother (whos probably lurking about here if hes not dricing his '82 911 SC) has TONS of pics from the Rennsport Reunion this year. Probably not as helpful as what you can find on the net though.

What other "classics" are you doing? Chaparrals? Lolas? Ferrari 512M? Jag XJ13? Scarab? Lister Chevy? So many to awesome cars to chose from....

keep up the good work and thanks for the teaser! Can't wait for the game...

Kurt

Talking New teaser

orbmedia, is this what you mean with

3. Flared rear for bigger 17" wheels.
4. Tiny rear winglets (not the 71 style fins)

Check the red-colored parts

John Brandt, Do you know a way to get in contact with Vic Elford and Dickie Attwood?

Jilles,

#3 Yes that's nice work on the winglet.

#4. Not sure. The flares were used on the rear to allow wider 17" wheels, but it caused the whole bodywork in the rear to bulge out on the sides. I think Rodriguez used it first at Watkins Glen. Your bodywork is the earlier LeMans style.
