Lightbulb Carrera front spoiler cut

My 88 Carrera has the front spoiler, which -as Carrera owners surely know- is made from some sort of foamy flexible sponge type material. Now, there is a horizontal cut/slit of about 2 inches right in the middle of this spongy stuff. In view of the fact that a new spoiler costs ...lotsa bucks... and given the slight nature of the damage (and wishing to prevent the cut from getting larger), I tried to stick some "duck tape" (proprietary brand of said-to-be very very strong sticky masking tape) to the backside of the slit, but ..it didn't stick at all.

My question is: what is this spoiler made of? what's the name of this stuff? Is there any kind of "paste" or "glue" I could use to fuse the cut so that it be, for all practical purposes, bonded?

I don't just go and try out any glue, for fear of having the glue chemically "eat up" the spoiler material and leave me with a full-fledged hole in it!

Thanks any takers!

Paul

perhaps you could use a staple gun from the rear?

When you say it is made of "foamy flexible sponge type material", how flexible is it?

The lip spoiler on my '84 cab is made of really tough, not so flexble dense black rubber. In fact it is so tough, if mine split I could drill the back of it and rivet a plate over the split

Then again mine is not an original "sport equipment package" car, the front and rear spoilers have been retro-fitted, maybe this explains it.

Thumbs up

Thanks Rob911, but no! Your spoiler is definitely different. Mine is no way near "rubber", it's the same type of material as may be found in some floor wipers (to direct water towards the drain plug) or hand-held window wipers for home-windows. No rubber! It's quite flexible stuff, made from what looks like millions of very tiny bubbles. Wish I knew the name of this material!

Paul does it have "porsche" stamped on it anywhere?
I am intersted to know which id the genuine type for my year, spongy or rubbery?
Cannot check at the mo as I am a few hundred miles from my car, I do know that the rear spolier has Porsche stamped/moulded into it.

I would try an ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate glue like Krazy Glue. If you are very cautious, try it on a hidden area around the back, but I've used it on the foam like rubber of the door weatherseals before w/o problems.

cyanoacrylates are too brittle. Try silicone. .. black works well and is easy to find; but try to keep it of the showing surfaces. . .it's very glossy.

Thanks guys, for Rob911 - indeed, the poop spoiler has "Porsche" on the underside, as to the fore spoiler, well it's very low near the ground and it's pretty dark out there, I have not found any proprietary marks anywhere.
