Pronunciation quiz

How do you pronounce Mahle?

kstar 01-09-2002 09:11 AM

I was wondering the same myself!

I pronounced it -mail-, but I heard it pronounced -ma lay- at a shop.

Not sure which is correct.

Anyone?

Regards,

Kurt

I believe the correct way is (ma - lay). I do not have the keyboard (or know how to set up) for German, however, I think there should be two little dots above the "a" in Mahle. I know this is called an umlous (oom-lous), not sure how to spell this EITHER!

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhh

I think I just confused myself let alone everyone who is reading this...

Oh-well, hopefully Roland will chime in here.... :D

I've only hear "Ma-Lee" with a stress on the "Ma"

BlueSkyJaunte 01-09-2002 09:31 AM

I've always said MAH-leh.

(ah as in "father", "eh" as in red, accent denoted by caps.)

An umlaut would make it somewhere between MAY-leh and MEH-leh, but the sound doesn't really exist in English.

MAH-ley ist richtig!

BlueSkyJaunte 01-09-2002 11:20 AM

So the final syllable contains a diphthong?

Just remember there are almost no silent letters in German. An E on the end is never silent. I've never seen the umlaut above the A in Mahle.

Richard is correct... www.mahle.de

Thank you!

This could be never-ending. How do you pronounce Porsche? Fuchs? Weber? Is saying "Vay-ber," which is correct, like saying "Paree" for Paris? At times I admire the Brit attitude, where pasta is "pay-sta" and Don Juan is "Dahn Jew-un." (Of course they also say sinjun for St. John...) And then there's Cairo. Illinois, on the Mississippi, pronounced "Kay-row," the thought being that those of us who speak English should use English inflections. The Japanese camera Nikon is properly pronounced "Nee-kahn," since there's no "eye" sound in Japanese, but we all call it a "Nigh-kon."

Err...

I don't wanna be a stinker, but...

Nikon is pronounced "Knee-Cone" in Japanese. And the "eye" sound does exist, it's just a diphthong of "ah" and "ee".

Hence, the celebratory "BANZAI!!!" http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/clap.gif

My wife used to live near Versailles, Kentucky. Pronounced (according to them) "Ver-sales". Never mind Armada ("Are-may-duh").
