help, odometer gear doesn't look removable

I am in the middle of replacing the broken gear on my odometer, but I can't get another gear off to be able to put the new one in. The tech article picture below shows the gear with arrow pointing to it with a shaft to push out and remove. Mine has no such shaft. It looks like the outer gear is directly connected to the gear on the other side. I don't want to take a chance and snap it off for fear of breaking it. Has anyone else experienced this. How do you get that gear off? Unfortunately my camera is not working to take a pic. Or is there a way to pull the shaft of the upper gear (the one I'm replacing)?

found really easy solution

Ok, here is what I ended up doing, which was pretty easy and so far is working pretty well. I cut the plastic tab which holds the shaft for the upper gear (the one I was replacing) put the gear on the shaft, then epoxied back the plastic tab where it belonged. In fact, I didn't have to cut off completely, just enough to bend it and slip the gear on. The cut is a little higher than the line I drew in the picture below. The hard loctite epoxy is probably stronger than the original plastic so I'm not worried about integrity. This eliminated the need for removing any of the other gears. I think you might even be able to do this without taking the face plate off or removing the whole plastic frame thing which is a nightmare without faceplate removal!
