Weird ignition switch issue on '74 911...
If I leave the turn signal or headlights on in my '74 911 Targa (stock), I can't turn off the engine, even if I take the keys out of the ignition. If I turn off the headlights and turn signal, the key and switch work properly. Besides telling me to not turn the car off with the headlights or turn signal on, is this a problem with the ignition switch? I have a new ignition switch part (electronic "plug", part number 964-613-012-00-M100) that I can install if that's the problem. Anyone know what would cause this weird issue? Thanks a lot!!

Is this the part that's bad?
This is the replacement part I have (purchased several years ago from our host). Is this the part that's bad?

Art, on my 1977 I can take the keys out and the car will still run. I don't know what year changed this into the safety feature we know today.
Also if I accidentally knock the blinker/turn signal to the on/turn position it may drain the battery just as quickly as if I left the headlights on. Is the part you ordered around $350? Are you going to re-key it or carry two sets of keys? |
George,
Thanks! I believe I paid $100 or so for this part several years ago and it's still in the packaging. If this is "normal", there's no need for me to do anything, I just think it's weird and thought the ignition switch was possessed... |
