Backdating rear lens from 89 to 84 look

Hey guys,

Anybody ever think of backdating your rear lens on a later Carrera to an earlier look with the large black Porsche letters ?

I always prefered the look of the earlier rear lenses with the larger black letters so i made the attempt over the Winter to make an 84 lens fit on an 89 Carrera.
The lens assembly is way different so there was some cutting, grinding and glueing involved but the end result is amazing as it looks like it was made to fit there originally.

If there is interest in the procedure i can post a step by step "how to" for anyone who wants to do the same !
Pictures were taken at night in the garage so they're not the best ...

Cheers !
Phil

Looks great. Kudos for doing it yourself.

FYI: The rear reflector with the black lettering is available new again from Porsche.

That would be great! In fact, you could make it a Pelican tech article rather than posting it in a thread.

I've kept my '86 reflector just for this purpose, in case I acquire a G50 Carrera some day.

Hi Wildcat, Nice work-I always thought the earlier lenses looked better-more aggressive or something. The old one would make a nice "flashing reflector" if you hung it on the garage wall for when you pull in at night.

Guys,

Before this post falls into oblivion i just want to mention that if anybody is thinking about doing this transformation one day it will be my pleasure to email you all the steps and pictures detailing this project.
There are too many pictures to post on this thread and it would be easier by email...

Cheers !
Phil

Sorry for the naivety, but what did the 89 rear look like? I have an 84 and haven't noticed a different rear...

Joe,

Take a look at the first picture, that is the 89 look with "invisible small letters" as compared to the second picture with the larger earlier car black letters !

YES!!!!! Holy crap I have been trying to do this without welding a new panel in for about 3 years. Gave up on it actually. I will PM you to figure it out but please post here if you can to help others.

Trying to make my 87 look more like a 74 Carrera. I have had a black "PORSCHE" rear reflector for 3 years now waiting to get it mounted.

How much for a new reflector from the factory? I paid $300 (used) for one in 2007 when they were supposedly scarce, then saw them going for $150 in 2009. Supply vs demand...
