Am interested in knowing what is the best octane # for the early 911's. I have a 73 "s" model. Have been expiramenting with various #'s. I know that Porsche reccommends 87, but I would like to know of personal experience. At present I am using 92, just bumped up from 89.5. Just not so sure????? Also, any problems associated with methanol blends so common at the pumps these days????

I have a 73S as well, I've been using 92
octane and wonder if it's overkill. 8.5:1 compression means it's possible to provide the engine with octane that could be difficult to burn completely. I'm thinking that 89 may be the better compromise. This is a subject that comes up from time to time on the board and there are lots of opinions. I doubt that anyone would argue with a 10:1 engine liking 92 octane. I'm just not sure that 8.5:1 needs it. Bruce Herrmann 73911S |

I've always heard that octane benefits are related to compression ratio and nothing else. On the 3.6's with 11.3:1 comp., 93 octane is a must and still marginal - thus the knock sensors, dual ignition and other goodies to control detonation. When I had my SC, 8.5:1 (?) I tried 93 a few times and it couldn't hold an idle. If you don't need higher octane than 87 - you won't get any benefit from it.
