Show Me Your MSD Setup!!
Hi Everyone -
I'm installing a new MSD box and I'm wondering what the best mounting location is. Wayne's book says to try and mount it where the old box was, but there's just no room there for this monster MSD box. If I move the box to any other location I run out of wire for the battery ground. I also have to use the Tach Adapter. I was thinking of mounting that where the old box used to be and mounting the MSD box directly in the middle of the firewall between the shock towers. Please post pics of your MSD setup so I can get a better idea of where to mount. Thanks in advance! |

Mine fit in the stock location just fine.

It will fit fine in the old spot if you remove the rear defroster relay and place it under the electrical console.
|
Looks great!

SCrescue -
Did you mount the box directly on the frame rail or on the firewall? If on the curved frame rail between the shock towers, how did you do it? Thanks! |

Here is mine. Post #18 and Post #140.

Any more pictures with the twin plug setup? I'm adding the the twin plug dist in the next few months. I currently have one MSD/coil running one set of plugs and the other plugs are just waiting for the new dist.

Not the best photo, but mines on the left. Same location as the old one except mounted horizontally. The plastic tray cover covered about 1/2 the MSD so I cut it down to where the whole thing is exposed. I think it looks better.
You might not need the tach adaptor. There is a wire that comes from the old unit and I think it is purple and black. Don't remember for sure ,but one of these other guys should know. Put a female spade connector on that and it plugs directly into the end of the MSD unit. It worked for me, but don't know about your set up. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284599395.jpg |
MSD 6A Mounting............
Here is what I did:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284600365.jpgThe alternator has an internal regulator and I rotated the rear window relay 90 degrees so that it lays flat. That left plenty of room for the MSD unit. I put male spade terminals on the MSD wires and simply plugged them into the 6 wire master plug. That way, If I ever decide to go back to the Bosch unit, it will simply plug in as before. Hope this helps. |

cole... doesn't the sound from the 6AL's drive you crazy? I put mine under the drivers seat and I'm starting to regret it.

BTR,
I'm older than dirt so it's not an issue; I can't hear it !!!! Cole |
Found a pic of the MSD wiring and harness pigtail installed.

Thanks for the pictures. I thought I saw a twin plug engine with one MSD unit and two coils once and just wondered if that would work. I guess it's two MSD units and two coils.
|
it does appear to work - at least for a few years
you may be able to find a thread on it via search |
That's what I have and it works OK. Problem with it is that half the available coil voltage gets to each coil instead of 100%. That means the spark is only half as strong at each plug compared to 2 separate MSD boxes. I'm going to add another box soon. But many would argue that the reason for the twin plug is a better and more uniform flame front and I agree. The lost spark voltage is not that big of a deal.
Advice: pay particular attention to the directions where they tell you to run the magnetic pick-up trigger wire from the dizzy separate from the rest of the MSD box wiring. This is critical. It's very tempting, for the sake of "sanitary" to pull all the wiring in one loom. Don't. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284660944.jpg Lindy |
Coil is mounted in place of OEM coil, Mallory Hyfire contoller box is just bolted to the firewall.

Thanks guys. I checked with J&B racing as well. They helped me with the rebuild and ran my engine on their engine dyno. Jim said the same thing. For a street engine not running over 7500 most of the time including on the track, one MSD and two coils should be adequate.

Someone had suggested a cutting board....so I did it.

I installed it in the stock location. I did have to move the silver box over one slot, but that was easy:D

Makes me want to try my new cd box
All of these MSD photos makes me want to install my new Daytona Sensors CD-1 box. I plan to do some extensive testing to see how well it works in the 1973 911.
Has some interesting specs. Comes complete with matching coil. Can be used with points, hall effect [pertronix etc..] and even has a connector for CPS crank position sensors. You can run it with mechanical advance, or program it for electronic advance as well as retard for boost. Also has 8 hours of data logging so you can see what is going on with RPM, boost/MAP timing. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284693588.jpg When I get done with my testing, I am going to report back to Pelican and our host may carry it if all works out well. |
This thread got me thinking about the location of the box. Even though I have it in the engine compartment now, I'm giving serious thought to moving it to under the drivers seat. I know from the MSD web site that the box does not like heat and the engine compartment gets very hot. I'm getting ready to pull my motor back out because of an oil drip that I just can't live with. I was talking with Henry Schmidt @ Supertec and we got on the discussion of MSD box location and his advice was to move it to under the seat. So it shall be written, so it shall be done.

Inside the cockpit is to coolest place. :)

sure seems like most, in fact the overwhelming majority, of folks are ok with them in the engine compartment. must not be too hot if they aren't all complaining about them not working there. discuss.
|
Yes- its an easier route....But heat kills everything in time........
Wasn't to bad as for the install--Under the passenger seat is your connection wires-, Plus I had my HKS-AIC connected from the front and back... Best of luck. :) Walt |

If does the firewall between the engine compartment and the cockpit part of the car heat up if you remove the padding/dampening material that is glued to the firewall in the engine compartment. If so, would an msd unit heat up if mounted on the firewall in the cockpit? Would the airflow of having to keep the windows down keep it cool?
Thanks scott |
Painted mine black and filed the tips of the cooling fins to expose the raw aluminum

I mounted mine under the front seat.. I guess I'm too old to hear the noise too.. I didn't need a tach adapter either..
