Another H1 Question
 

Well, I got my eBay H1's. The lights are complete. However, the chrome trim rings are in rough shape (as was indicated in the ad). Anybody know of a source for the 5-hole chrome trim rings? Thanks. -- Curt

I believe I saw them in the performance products catalog. might also check PP or call Parts Heaven.......

I'd think the problem with finding them at a wrecked-em yard would be that if the rings were in great shape, so would be the lights, and understandable that they'd want to sell the set-up as a unit. Another thought...how do the h-4 chrome rings and the h-1 rings compare size wise? Maybe a good machinist could modify the h-4 rings to become h-1 rings? Just a thought...I've never really studied the two side by side.

Paul, I hope it doesn't come down to that. I haven't set them side by side with my H4's to see if at least 2 of the holes line up. If they did, I could have the other holes machined somehow. Looks like I'll be spending alot of time on eBay hoping for some NOS or maybe some corroded straight rings that could be re-chromed to show up. And then there's the swap meets. :( -- Curt

Just how "rough" is rough?
I've had some pretty sad-looking m/c parts renewed by the excellent plating shop I use locally. These guys can do almost anything, even if they aren't always the cheapest.

Curt? This is part of the "fun" of owning an early 911. Guess it's up to the individual as to how much fun it is. Another option is to take the rings to somebody you trust,,replaters, refinishers. Then see if you think they could do the job, and for how much? It's sort of like taking the whole car to a body shop. Leave the project off, then pray you made the right decision until the work comes back. Only then do you really know. That's because you are the final judge. When it comes to your car, you suddenly become the supreme court. My advice? Keep those original rings. They can always serve as a reference point, no matter what else you decide to do.

1 ring is quite good. A very small dent on one side. Chrome would probably clean up. The 2nd ring has a bunch of scrapes and dents on the bottom, but the lense isn't cracked or damaged?? Strange. I suppose there is somebody out there who could straighten them. Heck, those paintless dent-remover guys do miracles, right? Paul's right, it's all part of the fun! -- Curt

Why not just get a set of the outer, single-screw trim rings that are often described as <b>'Paintable?'</b> If you don't miind the 'monochrome look,' paint them to match body color ... otherwise, get them chromed! One way, or the other, your rough H1 rings get hidden from the prying eyes of the world, except when you decide to agjust those H1's!

Warren, the seller included some outer trim rings (one red, one black!!). I suppose I could chrome those (I don't like the painted ring look). But I prefer the original look if possible! -- Curt
