My 85 Carrera Cab Alarm is Possessed
All
Background: This is my first Porsche, it is a 85 Cab and I have owned it for a year. The original window sticker stats that it came with an alarm. Here is what I have, a black key fob that sets the alarm and locks the doors, plus the special key lock in the drivers door. I basically drive the car to work on nice days or for running around town, and I never really used the alarm. Problem: I came out from work yesterday opened up the door and the alarm goes off. Weird I thought, I didn't set the alarm, so I try the key fob. The light doesn't work, so i am thinking that the battery in the fob is dead, so I open up the quick disconnect on the car battery to stop the shirking racket. Sure enough, the battery in the fob is dead, so I get a new battery, connect the car battery (alarm goes off), hit the button on the fob and turn off the alarm. So I head home, park the car, go into the house and then come back out to the garage. I noticed that the doors were locked, I open a door and the alarm goes off again. Hit the key fob, alarm stops. Then I wait.....and the stupid alarm sets itself 30 seconds later. Observations: When the alarm is going off, the ignition switch is disabled. The "factory" drivers door honks the horn when it goes off, the "aftermarket" alarm has a siren type deal. I have some sort of horn that has been zip tied to my normal horn up in the passenger front fender Question: 1. I am thinking that I have two alarms - the factory in the door alarm, plus an aftermarket alarm 2. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? 3. How big of a PITA is it to remove the "after market" alarm? I have visions of a FireFly episode where the evil Reever machine attaches itself to your ship and disables it. Thanks Jack

Removing the alarm is easy, just rip it all out. The one thing you will need to do is add 2 shorting links to the connector where the alarm plugs into the harness. If you don't, the car won't start and you will kick yourself.
Off the top of my head I can't remember the exact pins, so my post is useless! You can figure it out from the wiring diag easily enough. One is for the alternator the other for the DME.

Jack,
Be careful and be sure you remove every part of the alarm system!

I was just talking with a co-worker, he mentioned that his "clifford alarm" has a valet feature that seems to act similar...I am going to dive under the dash to look for a switch to see if I bumped something near the hood pull.
I will feel like an idiot if that is the case, but at lease it will solve the problem for now. -Jack

pplkook, I'm just down the 405. I've pulled many "Factory" alarms. It's a PITA but a good idea when these problems start happening.

Good news, I found a toggle switch under the dash. Bad news, it didn't change the problem, so it looks like I get to do an aftermarket alarm exrocism.
Hopefully my head doesn't spin around and I spit green pea soup. -Jack
