Right rear ticking sound 1988 911 Carrera??

I have a ticking sound coming from the right rear corner. It sounds like playing cards in the spokes of a bicycle. It was only noticable on acceleration, but now it occurs even with the clutch in, coasting.
It is a 1988 911 Carrera with 48K original miles.
I have found some old posts suggesting some ideas for a fix, but nobody I could find got back with the true culprit.

Any help would be appreciated.
Charles

My ticking turned out to be that I left my fan belt on very tight after using the main bolt to turn the engine during a valve adjustment.

I had to adjust the belt back to normal, problem solved.

Time to check the valve lash, as well as all other parts related to valve adjustment (walking rockers, etc.) When was the last valve adjustment completed? I'd start there.

Best,

Doyle

I checked all the obvious/easy things such as the lugs and CV joint bolts(I am certainly not a mechanic by any means), but they were tight and all looked good. I don't think it has anything to do with the fan belt or the valves because the noise is consistant with the tire speed not engine RPMs and there hasn't been any recent work done. All the CV boots looked good so I was hoping that they are alright. I don't think its brake related because when it first started, it would quit making noise when you coasted without applying power.

Thanks for all the responses! Please keep them coming.

Thanks JeremyD.

I checked all visible flange bolts on the transmission side of the axles. Is there any on the outboard side that need to be looked at?

Thank you.

Same bolt set up on the outboard side.
Jack that side up, rotate the wheel, listen for your noise.

To get an easy one out of the way.
Check the tire for a screw, nail embedded.

The bolts can be tight and the CV going away inside. You may have to wiggle the shaft be hand. The thing is, if the car is up on stands, the CV's will not be in their normal running position and may seem solid. Best to roll the car up on a curb so that you can get under there enough to grab the shaft. ANY movement of the shaft itself is cause to investigate further. Don't be fooled by transaxle backlash.

No noise when the tire is rotated by hand.
No nails etc.
The ticking is fast like cards in bike spokes. Sounds stupid, but that is exactly how it sounds!
Will try the curb trick tomarrow in the daylight to check for play in the shaft.

Thanks guys!

1988 Carrera Ticking noise right rear - another go round

With the car on its wheels, the axle had a good amount of play between the trans and the wheel laterally. No play if you shake it forward and aft of the car or up and down. Just side-to-side looking from the rear. Should the shaft move enough to collapse the CV boots on each side? I drove the car today and after about a mile the noise appeared. It is fairly loud, so the car was parked.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks again,
Charles

jack it up and check rotational play at both of the two joints for each side
another idea
when you hear the sound try pulling the parking brake on and off, might provide additional clues
you don't have many miles, could be one of the cv joints lost the lube somehow

Try to find an open unobstructed area where you can get the car up to speed put it in neutral and turn off the engine allowing it to coast obviously if you still hear it you can eliminate engine problems and start looking at all the possible culprits in the drive line. Oh yeah start the car and put it back in gear.

Just to thow this out there ... sound can play some really weird tricks on you. Check the front right tire too, for nails or bearing noise. I spent a week chasing down / replacing break parts on my pathfinder, before I took it to the shop and had them tell me it was the front tire. I could have sworn it was coming from the rear!

Just a thought.
