Power Window Guide Track Questions

Hey everyone,

I'm finally getting around to fixing my pesky passenger side window issue.

The passenger side glass looks like it came out of the rubber / guide rail (not shown in the diagram below) and the guide rail rides in the "cross-arm" assembly (#2 of the diagram).

Questions:

1) how does the glass stay in the guide? on previous BMWs I've done this type of work on, they've had screws that went through the glass itself. Is this window really just glued into place with the rubber piece, and then wedge in with the metal guide? What is the best method to get the glass to stay in the rubber insert of the guide track? I can get the glass to move upward. But when I go to put the window down, the glass stays up and the assembly moves down.

2) How does the guide track stay on the cross-arm assembly. It looks like it can just freely roll off either side. Am I missing pieces from the previous owner, or perhaps did they break off? Or is it just mechanically not possible for the guide to roll off the cross-arm with the glass in place?

Thank for the help!

My drivers side did that once, and I put some windshield glue in the rubber channel and it's been there ever since.

Hmmm, so it sounds like it's just glue!

I think that, combined with the aging rubber seals, which for some reason seem to providing extra resistance... may have been the cause of the glass popping out of the sleeve.

Thanks for the response.

had the same problem when i had the glass carrier all rusted away and had to make a new one, every time trhe window went down the glass stayed where it was so i used wide strong gaffa tape 1/2 on glass and 1/2 on carrier, works a treat and i can always remove it if neccesary.once this is done and the white plastic guide is in the track nearest the door handle it stayes there.also the carrier won't come off as the rollers are set to a length so it can't dureing operation, hursty 1990 targa 3.6l
