Early 911 without oil cooler- trombone enough?

Hello,

I have a '73S that came without a fender mounted oil cooler. I bought a trombone oil cooler and lines from a late '70s 911. Will that cooler suffice or should I consider getting a Carrera type oil cooler? I figure the extra cooling from the oil lines and additional oil capacity should be enough.

Thanks,
Neil

You might as well give the trombone a shot to see if it does the job before investing in a Carrera cooler.

I don't think the trombone will do the job, especially in an 'S' in a hot climate. I think a 'T' or 'E' might be OK with a trombone, but not an 'S.'

First of all, where do you live? My opinion would be if you are going through all the trouble of putting in lines and thermostat, you might as well put the carrera cooler. If your summer temps are above 90F, or if you live in a city with any kind of traffic, the trombone isn't going to cut it. That's why everybody get's rid of it. You might think the the Carrera cooler would be an easy swap later, well its not. The carrera cooler has have different mounting.

Definitely no, I have a 73S and it was insufficient here in San Antonio. I have a 28 tube cooler and it works well except when stopped in traffic on days above 90. I would go for the newer cooler with a fan. It's going to be a squeeze with the battery box, but it will be worth it for your engine.

Hot climate = Carrera-type cooler!

You were driving it before with out the cooler? And now you are adding one? It will definitely be better than it was before. What temps are you seeing now?
