Cranking

Hi guys well got the clutch exhaust and a few other little things done today. Filled with oil and cranked oil pressure builds nicely, just getting the battery charged up again I do crank her but battery is too low, got some indication she wants to start. Bugger if I have to do this in the morning now getting late 17:30.....

Turn it over, plug in the fuel relay and the coil, lift the air flow sensor and charge for fuel, turn the key and KERRACK...

like you might be 180 out on the dist? Do you have spark on #4? have a good ground on the coil? Power into the CD box? good connection and good wire to the distributor? coil wire into the coil deeply?
Just thoughts,
Bruce

Not enough power

Ok this morning I went out thinking that I had the dizzy 180 off so turned crank 360 removed dizzy lined up to mark with rotor and set dizzy. Cranked then backfire from right bank looking at engine from rear. Removed dizzy and turned crank till I could feel #1 intake valve come on cam right at TDC so TDC for #1 re-install dizzy crank nothing backfire again. At least I know I am at TDC for #1 so check spark at #1 plug ok. Removed dizzy and crank getting sparking noise from dizzy.
So thinking might be fuel, removed two random injection lines and lifted plenum to initiate fuel flow, ok both spurting fuel. Also when I removed #1 plug there was a fuel smell so I am confident now that fuel is being delivered through all new injectors.
Then checked all plug wires connected correctly yes and tight connections yes again. Then I put the voltmeter on the battery and it was sitting on the charger (trickle) 12.78v, I cranked a few times and then looked and voltmeter reading was down to 11.65v and climbing slowly. I reckon I am not getting enough power to really get things spinning properly. Off to buy a battery booster pack and get a haircut as it is getting out of control

If your intake valve is moving on #1, TDC is on #4 at that moment
You should be #1 intake rocks .1, you are on TDC @ Z1
Is it possible you dont have both cams with the 930 facing up?
Is there a reason youre not using a Bosch 001 coil with the CD?

Bruce,
Of course you are right I am off at that. I was not thinking very straight today and got myself lost on the revolution counts when I was cranking. I have the booster pack on charge and will change dizzy again tomorrow, thought there was something up as I still seemed to be getting exhaust backfire from #4 I think! No made doubly sure both cams were spot on before I started timing them.

I got in the garage today for the day with good intentions, thats why I didnt get back sooner. Record breaker for temps, almost 100F but I got started about 7:30.
90 C2, looking like more than pieces.

Well I took the valve covers, and chain housing covers off and my left hand camshaft was about 120 deg out at TDC must have slipped while tightening but I was sure it was not this bad or I would have noticed. Anyway undid big nut and got the pin out the sprocket, adjusted cam to correct orientation and re-did timing etc. Buttoned everything back up and tried again, she is trying so hard to start in fact got at least one revolution firing but could not sustain this. I think I may have a problem with my distributor it looks pretty worn to me. It so wants to start but just wont keep going when it catches???

Davy, 120 degrees off with cam timing during engine cranking is a lot. You might want to check the compression on that side. I don't remember what cam you finely choose or what your new JE piston dome's looked like but you might have kissed a valve. Hopefully I am wrong.

Mark,
No no valve touched, even when I had the cam at wrong orientation I did the piston/valve clearance check at the setting and nothing was close enough to do damage. The JE pistons I put in have the deep cutouts specifically for the 964 cam profile I chose. I have set 1.26mm overlap at TDC which is 964 spec!. Today I had the wife crank while I played around with the dizzy setting and got her to fire for what seemed an entire revolution , both exhausts were puffing a bit of white smoke. Unfortunately wife stopped cranking just as I reached for the throttle linkage to give her some gas. The reason I am thinking dizzy cap is that the copper inserts in the top look well worn. There does not seem to be any contact between these and the rotor arm. There is a bit if lateral play in the dizzy shaft but in the opposite direction to the rotor direction. I have had ignition on with dizzy cap off, when I turn the rotor through its slack at TDC I get a definite spark signal with dizzy TDC mark lined up with rotor tip. However as I say it just does not seem to getting enough spark to keep running! The plug gap setting is 0.7mm. Any advise anyone?
