SW Chip, CAT By-Pass, and Stock Muffler?

I'm a newbie: I recently purchased a nice 1985 Targa. :)

Is the SW chip and a cat by-pass with a stock muffler a waste of money?

I realize the chip and by-pass are a good combo, but am I taking a step back by not changing the muffler? I like the sound as-is, and I'm concerned that with a new muffler I'll not like the new sound.

Maybe just the chip alone would be a decent start?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I have an '86 911 and have the exact same set up. I'm very happy with mine! I don't think it's a waste at all. Sure you could get more, but, do what you want. The upgrade will be better than stock.

I think SW can sell you a chip dialed in for your exact setup. Very happy with my SW Chip with a cat.

Nice improvement in the 2000-4000 RPM area...less of a flat spot and fills in the "dip" in the HP/torque curve in that area. Careful, though, depending upon the specific programming you choose as you talk this out with Steve, your chip may ignore the O2 sensor and run open-loop instead of closed loop. Downside is that you run a bit rich. Upside is that you get a rock-steady idle too besides the minor but noticable performance/drivability boost.

Steve is a great guy. Do contact him, tell him what is your use and expectation and he will guide you accordingly. The best customer service I came across so far.

I did the same on my 87 but give in to a new exhaust, SW chip, Cat bypass and a one in one out Bursch exhaust. I love the sound, I am sure a lot of guys here will give you ideas on some really good sounding systems. Either way enjoy!
