Gear Shift Couplers and Shift Tubes
I have been looking at posts concerning couplers and shift tubes for some time and need to decide the best way forward.
There are many different bushes being made to suit the standard coupler some have 'oval' holes and some don't, some seem to be made from nylon, some are poly graphite, there are polyeurethane and now even bronze bushes. It is aslo possible to buy Universal Joints such as the Wevo range and the Tarret parts. So what is best? I always, understood that the standard coupler had some axial clearance to sllow for slight driveline shunt during gear changes and that using a 'solid' UJ could cause the transmision to jump out of gear and that the only way to avoid this was to use 'solid' engine mounts. This doesn't seem to tbe the case as many people seem to fit bronze coupler bushes or UJs without this problem. If this is true then the bronze inserts seems to be very good value and easy to install. Wevo also say that their Racing Shift Tube improves the gear shift as the standard 'bent' tube is not as stiff as the straight smaller diameter tube. Has anyone tried one of these tubes? |
