Looking for a early 911 mechanic in PA

I may need some engine work done this winter and am looking for an early 911 mechanic to help with my DIY rebuild. I need to farm out the machine work and maybe other work, but don't have any leads on a good shop.

IF anyone in the area has done a rebuild please e-mail me I would love to chat with ya

I am between Lancaster and Philly

Cheers

Have you heard of Dawe's (I think in Shroudsberg)? He is one of the best Porsche mechanics in the entire country.

Ed Varga has moved his shop (I believe) in with Fred Apgar's place, Apcar Porsche, since his sign's now on Fred's building.

They're located on Rt. 611, about 5 miles south of Easton, in the village of Raubsville. Fred's also a very good early 911 guy.

You have a good number of choices in this area.

As previously mentioned - DAS,

But two others I would strobglt recommend -

Performance in Malvern ( Peter & Paul)
Cyntex - West Chester ( Paul)

here is a link to the local pac approved techs

http://www.rtr-pca.org

Are you a pca member. I am in downingtown/West Chester area.

Early Engine Rebuild service providers (in likely order of expense):

(I've used all these and more for service btw)

Stock:
Ed Varga (that Foreign Car Place)
Don Galbraith Motoring, Inc.
Devon, PA
610-964-0477

Performance:
Dougherty Automotive Services
720 E. Nields St
West Chester, PA
(610) 692-6039

Full Race:
Peter Dawe

Now, when you talk about "helping out with a DIY rebuild", that shifts the equation a bit. The above folks are all very capable service providers. However, some are much better suited to the DIY process, and none are true one stop machine shops (that is a whole 'nohter question). The best way to get help as a DIY is become a client of a single shop, stick with them and develop a relationship. If you remain loyal they will do so as well.

Ed Varga is a nice guy who would be amenable to doing this sort of thing. After that it gets tougher. These are the premier providers IMO, but that brings with it some selectivity. Don Galbraith is also a possiblity as a DIY helper, but with any of them you need to get exclusive and be a client.

I think that most shops would be happy to build the long block for you, and let you do the rest. After that, you might be better just using a machine shop and local PCA folks (like myself in New Hope) to get the advise you need. And of course this board, Rennlist and the factory manual!!

Oh, and join PCA - Reisentoter is a good region.

Good Luck!

Chris

I am making my calls today

I need some head work done on my 2.2 Heads...

I will be removing the heads myself and need the two special tools. Is there a tool loaner group in the area? I need to use the crows foot and cam lock tool.

Cheers
Kerry

You are welcome to the tools

Kerry,

I have the crows foot and cam socket tools and you are welcome to borrow them.

Send me a PM and we can arrange a pickup, unless there is someone closer to you.

Cheers,

Chris

Dougherty's in West Chester. I'm on my way there in about an hour to have my drivers side oil cooler installed.

They have the full range of cars they service, from maintaining very early cars to complete race prep GT's. Bill is the owner great guy.

Great group of guys at that shop.

I am friends with Bill and Colin (now Mr. CDOC!) and think the shop is A-1. They have done work for me since the early 90's. However, if you want to have ongoing advise on an DIY engine build and "share labor" on such a project, I would look at the small independent shop.

Cheers,

Chris

Rallyjon may chime in.
He uses a smaller independent shop here in West Chester that he speaks highly of. You may want to pm him.
