Supertrapp noise question
 
I have looked through Pelican posts and threads but not found many opinions on Supertrapp loudness. Am considering lash-up to 86 Carrera. Don't want Hillbilly blap...blap...blap...results nor do I want to sound like some clown who thinks he has a race car. I have had BB on a couple of 930s as well as Monte on NA 911. All OK but pretty sedate. Any everyday-opinions on noise?

You can reduce the noise somewhat but you will kill your power when you pull out discs to reduce noise. They do something really bad on a 911. I only use them, with spacers between the last few discs, for tracks that allow a LOT of noise.

if you use the open ended end vs the capped end you may be in better shape, they do offer a lot of options as far as end caps and disk set ups .... although its a bit of a guess unless you find some one with one that you like and start there .......

JMHO,......

Supertrapps are a major move backwards for performance. These lack the volumes needed for sound supression without ruining the power band and when one removes sufficient discs to tame the noise, its akin to a #1 Idaho spud in the exhaust.

Lastly, these remove the crossover effect provided by a dual-inlet single muffler and thats a major loss of mid-range power.

Honestly? I think they work best on off-road motorcycles where noise isn't important and you can stack a bunch of discs in there (they do get heavy).

Even there they are just crap. I was motorcycle mechanic for over 15 years. The only ones using Supertrapp (in Europe) are Harley drivers because of the disc noise system and because it's American (main reason:D)

While I love the sound of Supertrapps, they will most likely be too loud for daily use. I ran Supertrapps (with 18 discs in each one) behind some of George's headers on an otherwise stock 2.7 and they made good power for me. The sound was GLORIOUS but they set off car alarms on a regular basis...

Yep, they also look like crap, too. One guy has one on his 3.6 conversion. Looks like a ricky ricer exhaust to me. Glad to know there is no longer a decision making dilemma.

There seems to be many opinions here, so here's some straight info;
WE (SuperTrapp) make many different types of mufflers, both utilizing the disc and some not.
From experience in talking to customers with various Porsche models, they are trying to use the 'disc only' versions that are not intended to reduce sound at all, they are a tuning tool. So they put them on and have to reduce the number of discs, choking the flow, to reduce sound. When what they should be doing is using a complete muffler for sound suppression. Just like many products available, we have had great success in both street and race situations, however if a product is not used correctly you can not expect it do something that it was not meant to do? Cannot tell if so on cars, but I have seen a couple of motorcycles with the recommended muffler and they had even less power than stock. This was in the 80's and 90's when law was very tough here in Switzerland. It's almost art to get less power than stock these days:D
