Riv Nut Kit...what is recommended to buy
I need to finally get a riv nut kit...
Can you guys reply with what you have bought or what I should buy...I am thinking metric fasteners & coarse thread...also, what do you all recommend for metal type/finish for the actual riv nuts themselves...?? Thx, Bob

Bob,
I bought mine from McMaster Carr. It is the black one which looks like a corkscrew with a t-handle. I have the M5 rivnuts, which work great. They have them in gold zinc plated steel, unfortunately not impregnated with the built in water seal. Only the American fasteners have the seal. You can add your own o-ring. I don't though. I think the kit is about $75 to $100. You buy the rivnuts separately. Doug

as it pains to admit but I'll be honest
harbor-freight , runs about twenty bucks and come with a few bags of nut inserts, also works well as a blind rivet take a look it may be the one for you .......... |

When I bought it around $150 now over $250 plus pulling studs and anvils. But I think it is worth the cost. I have used the el cheapo installation tools ( the ones that you tighten a nut in an anvil to pull the stud) and had had problems, the riv nut does not pull square.

Really do not know. I have four different types, one type has spline sides this gives more grip. Other type does not have these splines, other type has a smaller flange, the last type is similar to the ones in the kit that Fleming is suggesting. If you want I can post close up pictures of each one so you can decide. Most of them were bought from Mcmaster. |

Well...I received the McMaster Carr kit # 91230A600 thinking I was all set...I was dissapointed with it due to the rivnuts NOT being yellow zinc & also not having any flange...The "t" type handle was not bad, but I could see it possibly being a hinderance in tight areas...hand pressure was not too tough to turn the handle.
So, now I have ordered the wurth 19175102 tool which has m3,4,5,6,& 8 mandrels for $90... Also ordered rivnuts 091773,4,5,6,8 and the alum rivnuts 09481530,630 & 840 that have lg flanges...we'll see how these look... When I called to return the mc tool I ordered some of their rivnuts, 95105A167,171,175,179,183,187,191,195 which are lg flange/open ended/knearled... I'll report back next week when this stuff arrives and let you all know what I think of it all... One conclusion to date...it is a bi^ch to try abd descern on the internet what you are buying when the pic is a mile away from the item a/o it is a cartoon rendering of the item...urgh, urgh... Bob

Hi dp...been a while since I was on the same project...well I am back at it...
The specific problem area is 2 broken off studs for the flapper boxes... So, I have been researching all day trying to find a tool that will do both riv-nuts & riv-studs... Wurth use to sell a tool but discon it due to their vendor could no longer get parts made for it so they say...it was a nice tool but on the lg side like lg bolt cutter looking tool... DP...I have been looking into your tool more & more & there is a black handled one & a red handled one...do you know what the difference in the tools are...?? The on-line places have no clue... Also, it is tough to get info ie p/n's & where to buy the "METRIC" mandrels & nose pcs... I know you have had the tool for a while, but do you have any paperwork w/ where you bought the tool, p/n's, ect...?? I have been talking to Alcoa which is HUCKs' parent company or something like that & they are going to get back to me w/ the METRIC p/n's and that was 2 days ago... I am also looking down the road & trying to anticipate what fab tools I may need for fab & repair work...I also have a sweet tooth for nice tools...!! :-) Anymore great light you can shed here on this subject...?? Thx a lot for your help... Bob
