I have finally joined the broken odometer club
After 181,000 miles, the odometer on my 1983 cabriolet has finally given up the ghost... time to do some research.

Shane,
Save yourself the aggravation and send it out for repair. I messed with trying to fix mine and it just didn't work right. I ended up having a Michigan company, SPECMO, do mine and it has been great. |
Shane how have you been? Another project :D if you do the fix keep us informed and how it was to do. My temperature gauge or sender failed and need to figure out which.
Wow 181,000 miles:cool: |

Thanks all, this was the feedback I was looking for. I only wish that the thing was on my tach as I would love to get a two-fer (tach gage face could use some brightening up - mostly on the redline zone).
Michael, how have you been? Yeah, another project. I have actually been half-heartedly trying to sell her as she is just another distraction and I need a few less of those right now - my wife has been seriously ill since May. She is actually out in Rapid right now at her parents place seeing a specialist in her brother's clinic. Maybe we can get together next time through the Falls. |
Oh, and yes, 181K... and still running great!
|
North Hollywood did mine. Out and back repaired in barely a week.
Take a few pics as you pull it out...refer to them when you put it back in. |
Hartmut at North Hollywood Speedometer has been great to work with answering questions. We determinded that the cable and probably the angle drive are defective and that I should fix that first before mailing in.

I fixed mine with no problems at all. If your interested it can be done in two hours start to finish.
Good luck what ever you decide Steve |
I fixed mine myself also in a couple hours, it's not bad at all. Actually, that's how I found Pelican & the forum earlier this year - google searching for odometer fix and finding the great step by step instruction thread w/ photos :).

I also had no problem replacing the gear.

Thanks again. Have not checked on price of part yet, but might as well tackle it myself first if possible. I have credit I need to burn up at PP anyway. Anyone know somewhere that can just refinish my faded gage face. I almost would rather just the orange/red part be redone as the rest of gage is fine and if the whole thing gets done, I would worry about it not matching rest of gages. Anyone had success doing something like this DIY?
|
I did mine myself. As I remember the part was $30 and it took a couple hours. Not tough to do, just take your time, don't rush it.

Easy DIY....just don't get in a rush
