3.0l long block into a 73 911
I want to drop a 3 liter motor into my 73 tub. I currently have a 2.2t motor with carbs and I have access to a 3.0 long block for a good price. I know I will need to source a dizzy and I will need to re jet the webers. What else will I need for the conversion? I have all of the parts from my 2.2. Asking more of a budgetary question rather than technical. What other parts do I need to buy. We can get into the actual work involved once I jump into it with both feet. LOL.

What type of carbs do you have? 40 IDA or 46? I have 40 IDA Webers on a 3.0 and they work great with the jetting I have. If you have Bruce Anderson's performance book, use the jetting he recommends in there. Or PM me. I just got the correct dizzy from Tom Amon at Mobile Works West. (Actually, I will on Friday when he comes and installs it.)

everything will work from your 2.2 except the flywheel and distributor set up.
You will need a dizzy, 6 pin harness and either msd or oem cd unit. it will make for a pretty neat responsive package |
I am using 40 IDA carbs. Charlie, I will take you up on the jetting set up advice.
What do I need to do as far as the flywheel? I am bolting it to a '70 901 transmission. I am thinking this might end up being a fun lightweight little hot rod. Actually that is the plan. :) Kirk |
Sent you a PM. I have the same tranny as you, but don't know if I have the stock fly wheel. The car had a 2.7 when I bought it, and it may have had a flywheel upgrade, for all I know.

Just checking, but are you aware that the SC distributor spins opposite to all others? To use a 2.4, 2.7 or 3.0 C3 distributor you also need to change the crankshaft gear.

Depending on which wiring harness you use, you may have to re-map the engine side of the 14 pin connector to match the '73 plug.
I'm finishing up the same conversion, and made a custom wire harness. I'd be happy to share the pin-out and cd harness connections with you -- with the caveat that I haven't actually run the car yet, so I can't guarantee it to be bug free. There is also an issue with the 73 tach and the signal from the 6 pin box. I'm not sure this has ever been resolved, short of using an SC tach. I'm going to try, because I really want to keep the original tach if possible. Good Luck Joe |
Joe,
I will be taking you up on that offer. It will be a couple of months for me to get to the point where I am installing the motor. That should give you plenty of time to work out the kinks for me. :) Kirk |
Am running a 1981 Euro SC engine in a 1970 911T... with PLENTY of grins. The extra punch in a light chassis is a real pleasure.
If you need any specific info, just ask. As for the wiring, mine was a real disaster when I got it and I redid everything on the front of the car with a splice into the main loom at around the gearlever point... so not a good ref if you are trying to use standard. Good luck! |
