3rd Brake light on 84
I think they're effective. This is for people who are in highly dense populations like so cal. Worth the trouble to do?

If you had a coupe, I'd recommend it. But on a Cab? The only thing I don't like about my C2 is the ugly ass third brake light sticking out of my rear decklid looking like E.T.'s head.
But, if you can find a more graceful solution, I'd say do it. BTW, hows the clutch deal going? Did you read my reply?

Nice ride Kevin. A lot of money for the body kit, but it's definitely very cool looking.
I don't like the way they look though. Look dorky...Too bad they don't have some light that can go on the back of the tail lip or something...something long and narrow...a strip!

Yep, that's the same one I got. Looks like E.T. I don't like the big bar arc thing on the 993's either. I think that was '95 only. How 'bout one of those big stop signs that pop out like on a school bus?

it looks better in person, i think im gonna put a 3.8 spoiler on and remove the light also, and a cab top(i have half a top missing a bunch of parts) i bought the body from a guy in new york that raced at the glen, lights rear fenders(steel) front and rear bumpers with heat shield reinforcements, and gt2 front spoiler air ducts with shipping 1700, shipping was 200 couldnt buy all the parts new for that and i got a really cool front spoiler and rockers and a tow hook that sticks through the bumper, i original had slant nose fenders but i thought it was gonna date the car so put the steel turbo on instead, lots of fun used to be just an averge black 82 targa, saved parts for a year, i wouldnt have done the conversion i was set to buy a 1992 turbo look, but this car got side swiped then it was out side and the ice froze and broke a gutter and smashed the windshield and front fender, so the damage was more then the conversion, i really didnt know what to do with the car after the damage, Kevin but i guess its prety cool now

We canned the snorkle light on my brothers 87 coupe. His girlfriend bought him this one: http://www.************************/product_page.asp?attFlag=0&appFlag=1&productname=Roof+Spoiler&productfamily=Rear+Spoilers%2C+Tails%2C+Wings&subcat=Body+Styling&category=Accessories+Exterior&make=PORSCHE&model=911&submodel=CARRERA&series=&year=1989&vehicletype=CAR&keyword=&vendorid=&search=
If you don't want to spend the money, they have several ones that attach or find a rear window from a later model with it already installed. |

persionally I like the little goose head. I don't know if it has saved me from getting rear ended, but at least it is one extra argument that you were tring to make the car more visable and safer if you do catch it.

I bought a 3rd light, did not install it.
Got rear-ended (hurt my lower back). Installed it two weeks later. It may be ugly, but I have had some close calls, where I believe the 3rd light saved me. Good Luck!

I installed a 3rd brake light on my 85 carrera coupe.
I installed a long, thin 24 LED light mounted high, inside the rear window. Actually my install worked easily- I just mounted it to the roll bar. I'll post pictures if anyone wants, easy install and it makes the car MUCH more visible from behind- especially in a high vehicle- like an SUV. I would highly recommend the addition. |

Im wondering if your car was supposed to have the third brake light and you got rearended and the light wasnt on the car would there be a legal case against the driver, would make a hell of a argument in court, I am sure that most wouldnt realize it was missing, Kevin

I believe the third brake light was not installed until '86.

I would agree that for safety reasons the 3rd light will help since everyone in CA tailgates.
My pcar came with the light. If I had to drill my hood deck to put the light in...I would not. The light IMO ruins the lines on the car. I am tailess so I have the "shorter neck" light. Since your car has a tail you will have to get the "longer neck" light which IMO looks even worse.

A third brake light is a good idea. My 1985 Carrera does not have one. I am considering a somewhat different solution. I happen to have two of the old red rear fog lamps that were installed on the Euro 930 Turbos. I have been considering wiring these into the rear brake light circuit and mounting them on the rear valence under the bumper, just like on the 930. These things are bright and I'm sure that when I brake it will quickly catch the attention of anyone behind me. My only concern is that it could put too much of a load on the stoplight circuit. Also, I do like to keep my car original looking and I'm not sure the rear fogs were ever installed on the 1985 Carrera. This job is way down on my list of things to do but I may get to it before spring.

I have the ET light on my 78Sc Targa. I don't mind it but would prefer a better solution. I really don't like the upper/inside mounted third brake light either.
One solution I was thinking of is to wire in 3-4 light in the rear reflector that says "Porsche". This would illuminate the entire rear end when the brakes are applied. Although someone in a previous post suggested this was possible, I pulled the rear reflector and found this is not possible without extensive work. Has anyone done this?

Interesting idea about the Porsche reflector...also, a lot of good ideas here. The vote is split. The goosehead doesn't look great, but it's a good idea. Practically speaking, it's a no brainer, esp in so cal.
The reflector is on the same level as the brake lights there now...so I'm not sure that would help much except that you'll light more of that area up to the strain of the circuit. I don't think old wires like those could handle such power for long! I would like to put a light on the tail lip. Something long and thin I can drill a few holes, put the long refector-like light on the outer lip dead center, put some wires through and do it that way. Has anyone done or seen this?

The goosehead rear tail light is the worst thing Porsche has ever designed.
