Changed MC & now no brakes 80sc

Hello,
I have read alot here on the form about this issue after replacing the MC. I bench bled then installed. My question: Many people suggest a vacuum bleeder or gravity bleed. I didn't quite understand the gravity method to get the air out of the system. One person suggested removing the hard lines from the MC and when fluid appeared or leaked out he reconnected the lines then moved to the caliper bleed screws and let gravity take its course. This seems that it would take a long tI'me? I am planing on buying a vacuum bleeder but will be gone for the weekend. Should i let gravity do its thing while I'm gone? I was planning on taking the Porsche this weekend on the road trip but.....I found this very frustrating when I had no brakes! The old MC was the original and since I had time I thought I would replace it since I recently rebuilt the front calipers. Any suggestions on what I should do? Sorry for the ramble

Thank you!
Alan

Gravity bleeding does not take too long. I would say about 30min should do it. You have to monitor it so the reservoir does not go empty, otherwise you will just get air in the lines again. I would suggest getting a helper to pump & hold the brake pedal while you go around and bleed the system manually. Starting at the right rear, then left rear, the right front and finally the left front.
Good luck.

Hello thank you,
I tried to pump and bleed manually but nothing. I am not even getting fluid out of the MC? I assume its full of air? How do I get the air out of the MC by using gravity?

I also filled the flid containor with fluid and pumped the brakes. The hard lines at the MC are not attached and nothing comes out???? Should there be some fluid?

Are you saying that you have fluid in the mc, the bleed valve open on at least one caliper, and nothing comes out when you or your helper pushes the brake pedal? Or are you just saying that no one is pumping the brakes and you are just waiting for the fluid to come out? That is when Speed bleeders would come in handy..
Have you replaced the 30 year old rubber brake lines yet, maybe when you rebuilt the calipers?

Edit: I see that you are not getting any fluid out of the mc at all, even though it is not connected to any lines. I hope you are not doing this in the car...in case fluid squirts out all over your trunk. Maybe a dumb question but did you remove the plastic plugs out of the line threads on the MC?

Hello,
Yup...nothing comes out of the MC at all. Either at the MC itself or at the wheels. Perhaps its full of air? Yes, new steel braded lines.
thanks!

Can you take close-up pictures of your MC?
Did you also replace the fluid reservoir? The o-ring? I am wondering if something is clogging up and not letting fluid from the reservoir into the mc...

I may have mis-read but I thought you said you put in a new MC... or did you rebuild it?
Of course even new parts can be DOA...

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies! I'm stopping by the auto parts store on my road trip to the lake today (was supposed to take the Porsche....oh well) and purchasing a vacuum bleeder. I'll give it a go late tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks again....
Alan

Joining in on this thread. I put a new mc on my 73 and have gone through 3 bottles of fluid using a pressure bleeder. Have also done pedal pump method with helper and still no pedal. May be the last nice weekend before winter and this "simple" project has been going on for weeks now. I feel your pain as I am ready to snap!

spooldup,
I am going to give the vacuum bleed a try today. I'll let you know how it goes. I feel for you. This has turned into a real WTF job for me. I have rebuilt the engine and suspension all on my own with help from this form and its wonderful members...... and this has me scratching my head....

I just used a motive bleeder to see if I was getting a solid flow (flows slower than air type bleeder I was using) and it is a perfect solid flow. Guess I will order another new mc as I must have got a faulty new unit. I get very little garage time because my kids activities keep me running plus everything else in life. When I get the new one & get it in I will report back. Good luck & try to keep your sanity.
