Vintage Heuer Rally Timers
Anyone else have an interest (obsession?) in vintage rally timers? I'm in the process of purchasing a twinset to mount on the dashboard of my 911 (they fit perfectly on the glove box!). The classics are the Heuer's from the 60s/70s. Many different versions were offered, but all are very difficult to find today. Prices range from several hundred $$ for a single to a few thousand for a NOS twin. Nice reproductions have been made by Minerva, Herwins, and Sinn. If anybody has further information, sources to purchase, etc., please post a reply!

You can drive yourself batty with "coulda" and "shoulda". I had a "Mastertime" during my rally daze. Bought it for, I think, $49.95 from a R&T ad. It quit functioning. Wouldn't wind. Took it to a local Jeweler a couple of times to get it fixed. That didn't work, so I tossed it. Today? Buy a quartz digital Timex. It will be more accurate, and if I'd had one of the digital timexes when I bought the mastertime? The other Rallyists would have flipped! Gawd, back then some fools actually listened to WWV in order to get accurate time checks. Can you imagine? For hours, listening to a radio signal: "tock-tock-tock, then...this is WWV, based in Ft. Collins, Colorado...at the tone, the time will be...." YUK!

"Buy a quartz digital Timex"
Paul, I'm shocked and chagrined!! No digital electronic contraption will ever see the light of day inside the Gray Wolf. ![]() Saffs, not sure if anything is on eBay currently. They do appear from time to time. I've got a Heuer Monaco for the wrist. Those Chronoswiss are sweet too. There's been a real revolution in quality mechanical watches over the past couple of years. Lots and lots to choose from. -- Curt |

You're right, there is one on eBay. A chrome Sebring in great shape. Already up to $700 with 4 days to go. Anything much over $700 is probably too high on that one.

Here's the Chronoswiss. I'm trying to get a price on it, but I suspect it may be more than an original Heuer twin!

"the perfect Porsche watch, the Monaco, as I'm sure you're aware!"
...there's also a Heuer Carrera model wrist watch. Originally made in 1964, with variations issued into the 1970s. This one was re-issued recently by Tag/Heuer as well. In addition to the Monaco and Carrera there were the Silverstone, Jacky Ickx, Monza, etc. Markus ![]() |

Saffs, It was a tough decision but in the end I decided to go with the re-issue. I wear this watch almost daily and have already got a scratch on the case! An original, I might be reluctant to actually use it. Good originals, as you probably know, go for $2000 +; real good ones and NOS are closer to $3000. The retail on the re-issue is around $2500 and I found a new one from a private collector for less than 1/2 that price. The first edition of the re-issue Monaco are sold out from the factory and these had the original Heuer logo on the face. The second edition Monaco on the market this year has the modern "TAG-Heuer" logo.

Also, I think the Monaco is the watch worn by Steve McQueen in the movie 'Lemans'.

The Monaco is the McQueen watch. He was one of their main spokesman. Here's the re-issue, basically identical to the original.
![]() Here's the 2nd Edition of the re-issue of the Monza (Monaco logo same) with the modern logo: Last edited by cegerer; 01-15-2002 at 12:11 PM.. |

I found a source in England that has vintage rally equipment. They have some authentic stuff, but also some nice budget mounted stopwatches complete with lights, etc. They have a dual stopwatch with light for about $300 (170 Pounds).
Go to this website and go under "Vintage Rallying": http://www.holden.co.uk/ Glad to see there are other vintage rally guys out there. Rich |
