Early Recaro Sport Seats - Close by no Cigar

So, one day I'm in a hurry and find these early Recaro sport seats on Ebay that came out of a '71 Targa. I bid up $1,000 and win at $787.00

My fault, but had thought they were the real deal with different head rests. Now, I realize they are from a '79 Mustang "Pace car".......See Ebay listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_rdc=1&item=200525442899&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR4 0%26_trksid%3Dp3907.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3D2005254428 99%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&viewitem=

Or Ebay #200525442899 if link don't work.

So, I'll man up and buy if need be....I can put them in my '69 Coupe. I call the seller and he sez he's already been contacted by the #2 bidder who wants them.....I say, if that's the case, let him have them, if not, I'll send funds.....The seller did nothing wrong in writing his ad, I failed to do my homework!

Question is: Why are these really worth? Thanks for any opinion....

They appear to be Recaro LA seats, vintage 80's. They were sold by Recaro with the option of different seat mounts for fitment in various vehicles. I have the LS seats in my '69 which are identical but have slightly more aggressive side and thigh bolsters. These look in good shape, and with good upholstery and 911 seat brackets included (~$100+ ea, seem to be worth the price you paid.

But they are not factory sport seats, if you were looking for those instead.

Hello Bob;

Those seats were used in BMW's & it is my understanding too that also in 70's Porsches. The netted headrests are rather rare. I have the exact seats in my 911SC that I am backdating to a Carrera3.0. I sure like mine. They are "Nice Seats" IMHO & you are in them reasonably. I did have to make a spacer bar out of aluminum for them to fit my seat rails.

Your call on your options. If you don't like them, let the #2 buyer have them.

Yep those are Recaros from the 79 Mustang Pace Car.
Look like they're in good shape, and a decent price.

They should have a Ford Parts label under the side trim plate

I built one of these when I was a kid

I remember seeing that auction, and the seats on the seller's website.

I think that is a normally reliable seller, but his ad on his website was pretty misleading, IMO. The ebay auction, a little bit misleading, too. It made it somewhat appear that the seats were original to an early Porsche, which obviously isn't the case.

But for the ebay auction, it looks like several days before it ended, someone sent the seller a comment, telling him the seats were out of a Mustang. The seller, to his credit, posted that comment up on the auction (he didn't have to do that).

Did you see it?

I think the seller is a good guy, if the second buyer wants the seats, why not just let it go to the second buyer? Seems like then everyone is happy.

My fault, but no I didn't see the Mustang comment. I had forgotten i had bid until it was all over and I was notified I had won. I thought therey were the real deal, and the price would get to $3K +, so just bid a max of $1,000 and kinda got busy.......

Appreciate all the input.......I will let bidder #2 buy if he wants. If not, I'll follow thur and use them.....I have the Factory sport seats in my 73.5, and thought it would be good to have a set in the '69 project......

Sorry - a little late -

They were on both the Pace car and the Cobras - I have a friend who owns a Pace Car with these exact seats and he thinks in the $1000 to $1250 range if they are in excellent condition.

But, as he pointed out, the 'ease' in selling unique parts to a small market has becoming rather challenging over the past couple of years.

They were also an option on regular Mustangs and T-Birds. I had the caramel colored ones in my 80 Mustang 4.2 when I bought it brand new.

As I had mentioned earlier, these Recaros, even with a FOMOCO part number, were aftermarket seats available to any consumer who wanted to purchase them at the time. If the seat mount brackets are included, they're worth the asking price as well as bolt-on. Without the mounts, IMHO, they're more resaleable than any number of Recaro-lookalikes, many of which are of dubious construction (unsafe for motorsports).
