Confirm valve cover oil leak?

My recently purchased '83 930 has been leaking oil profusely lately. I couldn't jack the car up to get a better pic, but i managed to take this pic. Admittedly, i'm still new and learning about these engines. I'm pretty sure this is a valve cover leak, but can somebody confirm this from the picture?

Thanks for helping the newbie.

It looks to me like your valve cover is covered with hairline cracks by all of the nuts shown. I would replace the cover and gasket.

Do you know when the last valve adjustment was done? If not, or it's been 10,000 miles or so, it's time to get intimate with your machine. When you take the covers off, you should inspect for the possible through cracks (as opposed to the superficial ones that kanadary mentions). Cheers

I thought it was just a surface issue as well but i'll thoroughly inspect them when i replace the seals/gaskets/nuts.

But theoretically, replacing the above should get rid of the leak, assuming the cover isn't cracked?

Unfortunately, i dont know when the valve adjustment was last done.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Your oil returtn tube is awefully wet too. Degrease the bottom and pressure wash it then take it for a spiritted run to see if you can find the leak.

I had a leak that looked the same, thought valve covers too. Turned out to be my MFI pump leaking and running down.

With cracks like that showing, and not sure when the last valve adjustment was done. I would dive right in and reset the clock on the adjustment and give her a valve adjust and replace those cover as well.

IMHO you might just as well do the valve adjustment as part of the investigation of the leak, especially if you don't know when it was done last. You should replace the gaskets and the nuts if you take any of the covers off other wise you may have just started a new leak by reusing the gasket and nuts. Since you will also need to replace the gaskets and nuts after doing the valve adjustment, you might just do this at the same time, otherwise you're buying a gasket set twice. Also, you have to drop the oil if you're taking the valve covers off unless (as some Pelicans have done) jack up each side and seal it up before jacking up the other side. Cheers

Turbo, Its easier to R&R the engine, set the valves, clean it up on the table.
Chack the rocker shafts to make sure they arent leaking. The lines in the valve covers are casting flaws.
Bruce

This is the rockers leaking and moving off location.
