I would get a new arm, that is a giant stress riser where you don't want it.

I am growing increasingly horrified at the fact that I have cornered in that car at 120 mph.

Gonna buy a lottery ticket today.

You are coming right along. I found the rear end way more difficult than the front. You will love the way your car handles after everything is done.

This Carrera is one of the best-driving 911s I have ever driven. That is getting pretty hard to believe, based on what we're seeing in this thread, I know. When he gets it all put back together, it should be unreal.

John - what's the plan for torsion bars up front? Also, it looks like you may be due for rear sway bushings. You probably don't want to hear this, but as long as you are that deep into it, you should probably do the trailing arm bushings too.

The looked pretty good, nice factory finish on the outside still. I found some rust under one of the front bushings, and ground it out. Maybe I'll weld this up? It doesn't go through to the inside of the tube.

I'd replace that.

Consider the tube of the control arm carries the same loads as the torsion bar itself. It is actually a hollow torsion bar in series with the torsion bar.

Good salvaged arms are not that expensive.

Looks like new.....

Just waiting on paint to dry before I install bushings in the morning.

Dave,

These arms came off the gold car I parted a few years back, had in storage. I'll pull the arms off the carrera on sunday and if they look better, I'll rebush them and swap back out.

I've got front and rear sway bar bushing and trailing arm bushings on the bench to go in this weekend also.

For now, I'll stick with the stock carrera torsion bars, but may eventually go up to turbo size if I start to get frisky with it......

New bushings are installed, just have to go up on the lift and swap them out.

Got the old A arms pulled off today, and with Dukes help, got all the ball joints off.

I'm cleaning up the sway bars too...

Front arms are back together, and back shocks are in. Just have front shocks to install and swap out the rear sway bar links.

I am, piece by piece. She was a northern car for too long before she came south....I'd love to dip the entire chassis in POR

That's with an "s" ;)

jhelgesen 10-27-2010 05:40 PM

Struts swapped out without issue, other than to find out there was a Bilstein insert on the drivers side, and a no name insert on the passenger side.

She is resting on the ground again. The rear was 1/4" higher (24.75), the front 1" higher (26", but I did reset the torsion bars). I'll let her sit overnight, take her around the block tomorrow, see how she sits then.

Crazy things those previous owners do. I found a set of KYBs in my car with new appearing gland nut and some bizarre packing rope gasket on one side and washer with torx bit for a space on the other side. There oughta be a law with penalties equivalent to driving slow in the left lane of the Autobahn! Nice write up and keep us posted on your progress John.

I did spray some rust converter around before I put her back down too, pics tonight. :D

jhelgesen 10-28-2010 03:45 PM

Drove her around the neighborhood tonight to settle the suspension in. She handled okay, front was a little loose, steering wheel off a little.

Rear end measured 24.75, front was 24.75 drivers side, 25.5 pass side, measured to the fender. Alignment and corner balance is next.

Suspension upgrade is done, finished the alignment last night. Front sticks like glue now.
